According to VCDS Lite, my engine is running at 5 degrees BTDC whereas specified readings should be between 1 degree BTDC and 2 degrees ATDC.

Readings were taken when engine warm as it starts off around 5.5 degrees BTDC when cold and drops when warming up.

Any ideas how to advance it by about 4 or 5 degrees? I thought it could be done by the camshaft pulley wheel as the pulley is a vernier type, but adjusting this only seemed to change the synchro angle which I have now set at 0.00 as specified suggests between -3 and +3 CK.

Hi Richard have you checked the static timing with the locking tools.

Hi Chris,

No I haven't on two grounds, 1) I don't have the locking tools (I hear that drill bits can be used?) and 2) I didn't fancy stripping all that side of the engine down!

Also got side tracked as the electric run on pump wasn't working, so changed that and all seems ok now.

I did change my belt and tensioner the first time without the  pin and the crank locking tool but have since acquired them,  you are welcome to borrow them if you want, it does make it easier when getting a new belt back on.
Did you repair the pump yourself or get a replacement.

Cheers, Chris, will bare that in mind when I get around to it again. It starts on the button and isn't causing any major running issues, but would be good to get it running spot on in near future.

I had a spare pump in my garage, so simply swapped it over and will strip down the other one, probably replacing the brushes and see if it still works.
