I have a 2.3 16v ford galaxy which has recently developed a misfire its on cylinder 1 causing the engine to splutter an the drive jumpy worst when cold any recommendations to solve this problem

Start with the basics first by checking spark plug. It's not uncommon for coil packs to fail. If they check out then you need to start looking at fuel injector and compression testing

As above, the coil packs on these are prone to fail after extended mileages, there are a couple of different configurations- some have a single coil pack mounted at the end of the cylinder head, some have two separate coil packs mounted under the removable cover on top of the rocker cover (the one with the Ford logo on it and '2300 DOHC 16V').
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

I've changed spark plugs, also changed the coil pack still doing the same also just added injector cleaner to the petrol anyone got any more recommendations

Engine wiring loom across cylinder head also subject to deterioration may be worth a visual check on the wiring to injectors and idle valve etc
Have you tried pulling the plug leads off one at a time to determine which cylinder is not firing correctly, you may have a dodgy plug lead?
Of course we are assuming its not a mechanical fault like low compression on one or more cylinders, a compression test will confirm.

You need to start looking at injectors/wiring and engine condition now.
Firstly I would whip plugs out and do a compression test to rule out internal damage and then have a visual check of injectors and wiring. If all looks to be ok check continuity from injector plugs back to ecu.
Have you defiantly got it down to a particular cylinder? What did the end of plug look like when you had it out?
