Auto Gearbox problem

Hi all
just looking for a bit of advice, I have a 2.0 litre turbo diesel, 161 BHP Automatic Galaxy
This last few weeks I have noticed the rev counter falling and rising by about 500rpm when out driving
The car feels like its changing the gear unnecessarily , especially in the lower rev band and on hills
I have an engine management light on at present and the car is booked into my local ford dealer this week for inspection.
The car has 114000 miles on it
I am looking at a gearbox issue, Ford are saying very expensive to replace if it is a gearbox problem...
Any advice is appreciated

I would look at taking to an independent to plug in diagnostics and see what comes up,they will be cheaper than ford. If it turns out to be a sensor or something on gearbox then they should also be able to do that.
If it turns out to be internal fault then look for an auto box specialist who can strip and repair them as ford will just replace the unit in an exchange basis.
With an auto it's always worth changing oil and filter initially just in case the oil has degraded,if it has you can get slippage in box that could throw a fault light.

I would be gutted to pay for a new box , rough figures being banded around are 4 grand
but I will let Ford have the first look and see what they say, they did mention about changing this filter so maybe that will solve it.

Maybe diesel particulate filter with engine light and 100+ miles

You could well be right and I hope so..the filter you mentioned has been giving bother for a while
I should have had it changed some time ago...
I might just get this changed on Friday regardless.
If you dont mind me asking , how does this filter affect the auto box?

Powershift box?  These are not a "normal" automatic and have internal, wet clutches.  The wear on them will clog the internal filter and cause many odd symptoms.  Service interval is 37,000miles (60,000 kilometres) and the oil alone is ~Ã,£250.

Because transmission and engine ECU's share information an engine malfunction and/or limp mode will cause gear changes to be erratic.

Hi all
Ford changed the filter on the autobox and carried out a software update
This has improved things within the box but the gear hoping and hunting of the rev counting both continue
although at reduce frequency
I have hunted around both the UK and Ireland trying to find someone who can overhall the autobox but no one seems to be able to do so
Can anyone advise if there is such a company that can do this
A brand new replacement box is Ã,£4000 + Vat

I typed in autogearboxrepairs on Google and got a list of people as long as your arm. Seems one avenue for you. I have a small problem with the Automatic Gearbox on my Mk1. I think that my problem is linked with transmission fluid being incorrect. I drive pretty carefully until I get around to draining it and refilling with correct spec. My problem is how to drain! There does not appear to be a drain plug and refilling is through a side entry point in the box. I am surprised the Ford engineers cocked it up because they are very clever. My old Granada Scorpio was a piece of cake by comparison.

I think the mark1 is same as mark 2? There is a 24mm bolt on bottom of box to drain it and Either Allen key or multi spline level plug to refill and check level. Make sure you do filter change also and recheck level when warm. Think box holds approx 5 litres.

Thanks for the tip. My daughter has just returned my Mitsubishi so I can now jack up the Galaxy to investigate the draining capability on the Auto box. I am so slow that I have to have a standby vehicle when attempting a repair on the Galaxy. Regards Brian K

What happened in the end?   I have got a Galaxy 2.0 TDCI Powershift and it's doing the same thing.  I am worried that it might be more than just the gearbox oil that needs to be replaced...

My 2012 2.0D 161Galaxy had gear change issues as described - lurching, changing up & down when it wanted, engine revs doing their own thing etc. It went back to Ford twice in the guarantee period. Both times - no fault code, can't fix it.
When the engine light came on, well out of guarantee, Ford declared it needed a new box at Ã,£4k. I got Ford to fix it for free under the Consumer rights act 2015. If a second hand car has a fault at point of sale, you can send it back or get it fixed for free up to 6 months. If longer than 6 months, and you have complained earlier, but garage couldn't fix it, they are still liable.
It's a tad more complicated than that, but the AA site and trading standards are easy reads.
I've heard that Ford have updated the warranty on powershift boxes to 5 years and up to 3 owners. Not sure how accurate this is.
