Hi,

Unfortunately my wife hit our 2002 1.9 TDi SL Sharan at the start of the week, no injuries and little damage, but it has been enough to write the car off!!! So going to look at another Sharan tomorrow, it's a 2006 2.0 PD 140bhp.. I know there are certain engine coded with balance shaft issues, did this affect the Sharan's at all?  Or anything else to check with this particular engine?

Thanks

Adam

I've read reports that the 2 litre PD engines were generally less reliable than the 1.9's, partly due to the Siemens (piezo?) injectors used instead of the Bosch solenoid type in the 1.9's, however I'm not sure if all 2 litres had the Siemens injectors fitted, I'd say possibly not, because it looks like VW produced both 8 and 16 valve TDI PD units in 2 litre form, I don't know enough about which engines were fitted to which models and from which years/ vehicle spec to elaborate any further I'm afraid but as you say, there were other issues with the 2 litre including possible oil pump failures? Scour the 'net as much as you can for info, the TDI clubs and forums usually have plenty of comment on such problems.

There was a good thread with some explanation by somebody who was obviously well versed in the problems and differences between the fuel systems, if I can find it again (never can when you want to- typical  ::) ) I'll post a link.

I know a taxi driver who experienced oil pump drive failure at approx. 170k with a Alhambra 2.0 (about 2007 plate  I recall)
His opinion is that the 2.0 CR diesel is nicer than the 1.9 PD but less reliable.
Not dissimilar to many other cars though - cars are more economical / powerful / smooth than ever before - BUT at the expense of longevity and ease of repair.

friend of mine runs a bus company and uses a 140 for a runaround, its done 105,000 miles with no problems at all, a mix of high speed motorway,   towing and running around local.

I nearly bought it but i didn't like the spartan feel of the VW compared to the Ghia trimmed Ford

Thanks..  I left that particular one as it had a couple of other issues.. seems to affect the 2.0PD in the longitudinal mounts such as A4, Superb, passat etc.. I think some of the early 2.0PD had issues with porous heads and injector issues.
