Hello to everyone.

I have recently bought a Ford Galaxy 1.9 PD engine. Is an MK1 from year 2000. The problem is that I don't know what type of engine I have. It is a PD diesel but I don't know the code.

The car lose power and I suspect the turbo. I saw some tutorial  about vane cleaning and I got out the turbo for inspection and cleaning. But for my surprise I found that I have a non VNT turbo. It has fitted a normal turbo with wastegate. In the same time I saw that the exhaust pipe where fits in turbo was modified by somebody who welded another end of this pipe to fit the non VNT turbo.

Now, my question is, if anybody knows if normal turbo with wastegate was fitted in PD engine? I specify that I have the N75 actuator but where shoud I connect it?

Thank you.

Is yours definitely a Mk1 and not a Mk2 Galaxy?

Of the Mk2 models I'm fairly sure only the lowest output 90hp PD diesel (engine code ANU?) had the fixed geometry turbo fitted.

Hello. It is definitely an MK1. It is from year 2000 but is an MK1. The problem is that I noticed the N75 actuator. This from what I know is to regulate the VNT vanes. But my turbo doesn't have those. The welded end of the exhaust pipe to fit the turbo make me think that in the past somebody changed the turbo with the incorrect one. Another fact is that when I bought the car it had all the vaccum lines messed up.

Depending on the Country your vehicle was originally sold in, do you have an owners document telling you the engine code/ specification? My British registration document does. We can also use Ford's ETIS to tell us the vehicle specification (at least how it was when it left the factory), can you do this?

If you have an unused or disconnected vacuum actuator then it sounds very much like somebody has binned the original VNT turbo for a fixed one, especially if they've messed around with the exhaust to make it fit. On the Mk2 TDI's, there are a few other differences between the VNT and fixed turbo variants which may help you confirm what's gone on (assuming that the same differences applied to the Mk1)-the higher powered TDI's (115, 130 and 150ps) had the VNT along with an EGR cooler, a sphere shaped vacuum reservoir on the front of the engine and an anti-shudder flap (butterfly)- with a separate vacuum actuator and it's own vacuum supply- on the EGR valve. I think all of these were lacking on the lower powered variant with the fixed turbo.

Having said all that, what is controlling the turbo wastegate the way it is set up at the moment?

Can you attach a few photo's to your post of the engine bay turbo and N75, it may help confirm which engine setup you have.

Here are some photos of my engine.

Underneath the air filter box on the top plastic timing belt cover there's usually a label which has the engine code on it, though it may not be readable but worth a look:

Also, we could do with some pictures of the EGR valve and inlet manifold of your engine to see if it has an EGR cooler and the anti shudder flap type EGR valve fitted.

I see from your photo's you are left hand drive so UK spec may not be relevant the AVF code appears to be a 130ps PD engine, the 130 wasn't available in UK Galaxy's  till 2003 with ASZ
Or maybe this is an oddball car it may not be the original engine fitted.

I think that they changed the engine. Being an 130bhp is for sure that don't fit an fixed turbo.
