Smell coming through heating system

Hi Everyone ! after years of trouble as a land rover Freelander owner   I have just bought a new car for the family yesterday, a 2008 Galaxy 1.9tdci Edge. Mileage is 198k.

On the way home the smell of diesel is coming through the heating system and into the cabin, its goes away at high speed on motorway, it seems to be when you drive the car stopping and starting in built up areas . No warning lights or other issues are apparent with the car.

Can anyone point me I the right direction as to what could be the cause of this ? and possible solution?

Howdy!

There's no diesel fuel or pipework directly involved with the blower system so it's more likely it's drawing in air at the intake (tucked up in the engine bay usually) which is contaminated with diesel fumes, meaning there's possibly a leak somewhere in the engine bay. First thing to do would be to open up the bonnet and have a good look/ sniff round looking for wet pipes, leaking seals, something disconnected etc. It may also be necessary to look from underneath.

I had this on my 2006 2.0 diesel. Turned out to be the injector seals.

Leak off pipe work is a favourite in the ford lumps either the pipe or the plastic clips.
