Hello

I am about to attempt to replace my air con compressor,  are there any hints or tips about doing so as I've never attempted it before. I'm assuming all the gas will need to be removed beforehand?

Thanks I'm advance

Yep, the system must be degassed first. The airbox needs to come off, the alternator above the compressor will also need removing in order to get the compressor out, and probably the auxiliary belt tensioner- (and obviously the belt) which is held on by 3x 13mm bolts. The compressor itself is retained by 2 (16mm?) bolts which remove from the alternator belt side, and the compressor clutch wiring multiplug also needs to come off. The two aluminium refrigerant pipes which bolt to the compressor are retained by internal hex (allen key) bolts- can't remember the exact size but it's in the region of 6-8mm. It's a good idea to replace the sealing o-rings on said pipes if disturbing them.

Seem to remember taking my compressor of from underneath!

Yeah it must be possible to remove from underneath as well Chris- is that how TIS tells you to do it? That must involve moving the power steering pump? When I moved my compressor to change a refrigerant pipe I went in from the top and removed the alternator first, which may be a longer winded way of doing it but IMO gave better access.

No you can remove it without removing alternator or power steering pump.
Once the pipes are out the way it will come out between the other components

In which case disregard my earlier suggested procedure! Be advised though that I found at least one of the refrigerant pipe bolts was inaccessible with the compressor in it's fitted state as the thermostat housing/coolant pipe is in the way, so you either need to drain the coolant (and take off the thermostat housing)- which is always messy and too much hassle for my liking, or remove the refrigerant pipes once you have released the compressor and are able to move it a bit!

Just having thought about this a bit more, I'd be interested to know if the air con compressor on the 130/150ps TDI models can still be removed in the same way as per the 90/115ps models due to the different radiator pack/ intercooler arrangement- the 130/150ps models have the intercooler mounted as part of the main rad pack (instead of mounted low down & separate) which results in the combined condenser/ intercooler/ radiator/ fan assembly protruding at least 50mm further into the engine bay and as a result reducing working space in comparison to the 90/115ps TDI's. When I changed the radiator on my 130ps TDI I had a bugger of a job simply because there was next to no room between the fan cowl and engine (oil filter housing) to move the fan back once unbolted in order to slide the radiator out between the fan and intercooler.

Well for the past 3 days the air con has worked all the time I've been in the car. The aircon mam told me to keep trying it, turning it off when it stopped blowing cold and then back on after around a minute. He said try it for a week and that should free up the sticky valve which it seems to have done. So, fingers crossed all is good now.
