Hi all,
Two weeks ago did a service on car.The most annoying part was taking the cover off underneath the engine to get to drain plug.(did it on my drive)
I recently noticed 2nd gear feels notchy. After reading on the forums here ,ithought I would first check the oil and change if needed.Do I need to take the cover off again or is there anyway round this.
Also any suggestions on what oil to use if I need to change.
Thanks .

Unfortunately yes, the cover needs to come off again! The check/fill is on the front of the gearbox so you might possibly be able to get to it from above if you move the intercooler pipe out the way.

Personally, if its not been done before then its not worth just checking and you should replace.

You will also need a VAG spline tool for the drain and fill plug.  Also I found it easier to fill from above via a short length of tube and funnel leading to the fill plug. From memory the proper oil is about Ã,£20 a litre and you need approx 2.5l

I have this tool but others are available.

As has been said, the engine undertray needs to come off to access the drain plug, you can refill either by a tube/ funnel and gravity feeding as has been suggested or if you've got one of those gear oil bottles with the flexible spout then you can use that to achieve the same result. Personally I used a fluid syringe as outlined here to refill. If the reason you want to change the gearbox oil is because of a notchy 1st-2nd gearchange especially from cold, be warned, it won't necessarily make much improvement!
