Chaps

I have on my MK1 a virtually brand new aux heater - less than 18 month sold. It stopped working a while back - After some advice from you I re soldered a wire that had corroded and all worked well. Now it has stopped again. I suspected dosing pump as I had repaired the original one. I have since obtained another ( from Mark) which hasn't cured the problem. I have had the corroded wires problem on this component  as well and have replaced the connectors. However it still doesn't seem to be sending fuel to the heater.  When testing there is 8.4 volts at the pump connectors. Is this correct? If not, where do I look for the problem?

Hi BJ
I'm sure all the components of the heater are 8 volts, when testing the pump you need to flash or repeatedly touch the terminal with battery voltage, this will see if the pump is actually doing anything.
And of course you have a MK1 so you can't check with vcds :(

Thanks Chris so I can assume that that is ok then. The dosing pump works when flashed so may be I have another fault.  It is conceivable that the glow plug has gone - I doubt it but you never know. I have a spare heater so I will try that.

Has anyone found a reliable test for the glow plugs as I have three that when you apply 12v to them they all glow beautifully hot yet they were removed as being faulty?

If it's not an obvious wiring problem can only suggest you do the pinpoint test which is on the TIS disc, have you got a copy of the disc?

Hi Chris

Yes I do - but it's on an old laptop that takes a week to fire up!.  I just checked the voltages - the dosing pump receives 9.6v with he engine running. I have bridged the sensor on the wiper linkage to call for heat but note that the voltage stays there at the dosage pump if I remove the bridge conection - does that sound right to you?

Many thanks Chris.

I have now solved the problem!!.  I removed the aux heater and replaced it with the original one which I had refurbed with new glow plug etc. some while ago. I was going to sell it on fleabay but didn't so now I'll strip the newer one down and check that one for issues.  As soon as I fitted it and started the engine it started up straight away!.  Jeeze what a palaver.
