TDI (Mk2 PD) oil usage between changes

Just wondering if fellow TDI owners find that their engine uses much oil between services/ changes? Of course with the turbo and crankcase ventilation putting oil into the inlet tract a bit of oil usage is normal, I last changed my oil about 6000 miles ago (need to change it again soon) and had to put about half a litre in to bring the level back up to the top of the cross hatching on the dipstick, have other owners found similar?

cheers

About the same 1/2  liter berween services. To put it anotger way i only buy 5 litres at service time and that lasts till next one.
One a 170000 mile engine

The same, 5lts covers a change and a small top up.  I have a spare 1ltr bottle but have never needed it.

I hope this doesn't tempt fate now  :P

 cheers

Thanks guys, good to know it's fairly normal, I tend to do most of my miles stop start in town unfortunately which isn't ideal, so try to do an oil change every 5k or so. I'm planning on cleaning the crap out of the inlet manifold come spring, as well as the EGR valve (must be bunged up as there is a bit of oil seeping out of the base of it), I do try to give it an Italian tuneup fairly frequently to stop the turbo seizing up, and it does get a decent run most weekends.

The PD motors are obviously good for high milages if looked after, I wonder if most of them have managed to get there on their original unit injectors? I wouldn't want to renew a set of those looking at the cost of replacements!  ???  :o

My MK2 has 219k on the clock with the original injectors etc. It now puffs out blue smoke for a minute or so on start up but I think that that is just valve stem seals. I usually change the oil at 5k miles with just a filter change in between. I reckon mine uses around 1/2 litre every 3000 miles ish.  It passed it's MOT in late January with no comments on emissions so I assume all is OK.
On the Square

even on the filler flap it says to check oil level every 600 miles....and that's from new !

Never had to add any oil between services.

Just out of interest, how regularly do you change the oil on yours? I've changed the oil twice since I bought mine, between the first and second changes I did about 4.5k, and in that duration it didn't need topping up. Since I changed it last I've done about 6k and when I checked it recently (admittedly it was very cold outside) it had dropped pretty much to the minimum mark, funny thing was the last time I'd checked previous to that (which was a while ago I admit) it was still fine so it seems to have dropped quite quickly, I don't think I've sprung a leak anywhere!

Anyway, will change it again when it finally warms up a bit and keep an eye on it!

I do mine every 6K, generally I fill it to the max mark and when its time to do it again its normally dropped by a quarter on that scale

When it tells me it's needs a service. This tends to be around 12 months. I usually charge filter and fill it to the max. Then check and top up after I've used it. It usually drops to just above min on the first run as the oil circulates then, after topping up doesn't need any till the next service.
