Rear Quarter Window

As I was passing a lorry on the A1 yesterday my n/s rear quarter popped, most of the glass seems to have gone out of the car and no sign of a foreign object inside the car or impact damage around the window, it certainly woke me up a bit and was very glad no one was sitting in the back at the time.

Anyway, I've taped up the hole pretty quick as it was raining and ordered a replacement from a breakers so only had a really quick look.  Has any one change one of these? is it fairly straight forward?

Is yours a Ghia model with rear air con? I ask because the models fitted with rear air con have a fixed quarter window on the nearside rear due to the air ducting running up into the roof lining from the rear blower box. I've never removed one but the parts diagram implies it's secured by a couple of screws through brackets at the front end (possibly hidden behind the interior 'C' door pillar trim?), depending on if your window is fixed, manual or electric will determine how it's secured at the rear- in any event I would expect the 'D' pillar interior trim will have to come off to access the fixings.

Hi Paul, thanks for that, it is a Ghia but only single air con and its an electric opener.  Looking at that diagram it looks like both C and D trims will have to come off.

From what I recall you don't need to remove either panel, just undo the single screw holding the glass to the opener, which allows the glass to hinge out further then normal and thus disengage at the hinge end.

Ah ok, thanks Mark, the new glass should be here tomorrow so I'll get the covering off and have a look.  I'l try and get some pictures for clarification.

Having looked at the electric rear quarter window motor to glass mounting on my Gal earlier, you'll need a screwdriver bit in a very compact 1/4" ratchet to get on the retaining screw that holds the motor 'arm' to the window itself- the 'bulge' in the 'D' pillar trim that conceals the motor prevents you from getting a normal screwdriver on said screw, with the window in either open or closed position.
