Door gaiter replacement/ Broken wiring

Usual prob with windows not working all the time so dismantled door card to check switches and loom and discovered lots of grotty black sealant and duck tape. I then found article by chrisbp which had great pics so went to door gater undid ring on door frame pillar and pulled out plug, removed locking ring, pushed up gaiter and repaired two breaks with spliced in wires cut to generous sizes .

Then the fun started.
I couldnt work out how to replace the locking ring back on the socket as couldnt push it up high enough to let the tabs click into the lower position. I assume the locking ring covers the first? corrugation of the gaiter in effect sealing it??

Looking at the pillar socket..firstly there is a ring now loose and i cant get it to catch onto the lip of the hole in the pillar. Secondly the socket just inside wobbles around and has misaligned itself so that pins and sockets are not aligned.

Can anyone give me a few hints what is wrong.  Been searching forums today for more pics but to no avail.
Tks for any info.......

Ahh yeah that can happen :( The socket on the car go's through a cut-out in the bodywork with a pip at the top (IIRC) to align it correctly - the thin ring then screws onto that to hold the socket in place. A dab of superglue can be used to help hold the bugger in place and then a thin smear of WD40 to allow the plug to rotate on the ring when its reinserted.

Thank you for the info all I can say is A**E!!!!  Please tell me I havent got to strip out inside of car near fuses to push it back into place to fit the ring/??? Please tell me there is a handy hint /trade secret to do it in a couple of mins.  :( :o

Just did my 3 hours ago takes around 30mins to do. you will need to take the trim off plus bonnet release handle held in place with 3 screws also removed trim that covers the fuse box 5 hex screws this will give more room to access to  inner plug. what I did was I pulled both plugs out and joined them together just to see how they fitted before putting them together the right way just push together and twist to lock. Can be a pain to fix together good luck ;D

Marvellous thanks for taking the time and trouble to give me the info will do it this weekend.

When i dismantled the locking ring part, (the twisting bit with groves so it can all turn) I didnt take proper note of how the end of the gaiter interacted with the ring part you turn to disconnect it from the pillar. I have tried several ways but each time i cannot push the grooved part up high enough to 1/ make the little clips locate in the bottom position or2/ lock the gaiter in place.
Does the gaiter end just butt up against the ring or is it clamped by somehow inserting 1/2 inch or so of gaiter between the ring and the body of the plug.

Strewth not sure if thats understandable i wll try again if need be. Been looking for diagram that might show the assembly but no luck so far.

Cheers

It sounds like you have fitted the rubber gaiter over the second lip, it should only go over the first lip which is slightly smaller diameter than the second, this allows the locking ring to slide all the way up covering the edge of the gaiter and stops it pulling off

Exactly that so now have gaiter locked in position. Locking ring very hard to turn against the rubber so tried a squirt of mr sheen (silicon polish) but not an awful lot better. Didnt try wd 40 as i believe it rots rubber. Any other ideas?

Trying to get at back of pillar socket and MOH refers to 5 screws holding the panel covering the fuse panel but i can only see two which areon sure when you lower the fuse flap/door. Can anyone advise where the rest are as dont want to start heaving and snap things....

Thanks for all your help..

Take a look here, it shows the location of all the screws.

There you go Paul beat me to it, :) you can buy rubber lub in a spray but a bit of liquid soap should suffice.
