clutch replacement 04 galaxy

hello i suspect my clutch needs replacing as it is just showing small signs of slipping i have a reasonable facility available and have changed a lot of clutches heres the question should i replace like for like or convert to a conventional clutch the galaxy is an 04 model with 156k on the clock drives well 1.9 diesel 6 speed  box and i like the motor  would guess yearly mileage as 10k  best wishes  Dagodave

i replaced my clutch in july this year to a single flywheel, done 1800 miles and starting to have issues with the clutch now, difficulty getting it into 1st and reverse and if i hold the clutch down with it in 1st or reverse its difficult to get it into neutral, im hoping the issue is when i dropped the gearbox out a strip of plastic like half a stick of wrigleys gum fell on the floor, this is in the selector where the cables clip on the gearbox and im hoping the 1.5mm of plastic thats missing is the cause,,,,,pulling away can be a bit clunky with the single flywheel  and noisy and 5th gear whines a bit if labouring. 4 part clutch cost me Ã,£198 + vat. i have since found out the previous owner drove the car when the slave cylinder gave up and forced it into gear over a week or so.....

The old solid vs. dual mass flywheel is a long running debate, it is certainly true that dual mass flywheels are prone to failure and are costly to replace, so it's understandable why some people ditch 'em for a solid one, however, the dual mass flywheels are fitted for a reason- when you've got a diesel engine producing a lot of torque as with the PD engine fitted to the Galaxy, the dual mass flywheel helps to smooth out the power delivery which also has an effect on the takeup of drive as well as reducing snatch and wear in the driveline components- gearbox, CV joints, driveshafts etc.

In short, it's a tradeoff- it's not without consequence. For me, I would stick with the factory installed setup.

I changed mine out just over a year ago.  Replaced like for like and I pull a 1700kg caravan and a fully loaded roofbox on my hols.  It drives fine, just as I would expect it to for circa 150k, slightly notchy in gear change when cold during the winter months but that's down to age and wear on the box.

As above, the dual mass is there for a reason

I'm not sure the higher mileage is the cause of a notchy gearchange (especially 1st-2nd!), it seems to be fairly standard- when I got my Galaxy (TDI with the 6 speed manual 'box) it had 83k on the clock and it's always been notchy 1st-2nd, especially from cold!

Mines exactly the same and was from when I got it again at about 83k.  It had been used for towing a caravan before I got it, though I'm not sure that's relevant.  Mirez found a general improvement in gear selection when we replaced his (worn) inner drive shaft with the MotoMax Polish version https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/galaxy-mk2-gearbox-drive-stub-axel-and-half-shaft-(inner-drive-shaft)/msg57/#msg57 (Couldn't find this link in the Reference Library Contents, but it's there if you look through the list - I searched for "Polish" because I've looked at it quite a few times!)
