Tow Bar removal - Will Electrical problems then ensue???

My van 16yrs old now and don't pull so well so I think it's time to maybe pull off the towbar. Thing is unlike a lot this age the electrics all actually work great. Should I leave well alone or what? (I'm a trained mechanic but not auto electrician if that helps your advice)

Depends on how the bar was originally fitted, if its oem then it may be connectors else it will be scotchlocks (eugh) - leave well alone!

Good advice, i'll have a look behind the light fittings... Any pictures of the OEM fittings floating about on here please???

I can get you one for the Mk2 which shouldn't be that dissimilar, alternatively just chase the wiring. If you remove the rear scuff plate (the long one around the tailgates locking bar) then lift the carpet you'll see where it enters the cab - most of the cabling then runs to the N/S where it joins in - if its OEM then you get a connector piggyback so you'll see a connector followed by 3" (ish) of wiring (where its spliced) before another connector.

Mucho bad news, checked and there is a nest of the dreaded blue scotchlocks in the n/s well

Have you got the bumper support bar that will need fitting if you remove the towbar? This would have been removed when the towbar was originally fitted and does the real work of protecting the rear of the car from a rear end shunt. If you haven't I would leave well alone, it would also leave the option of using it to tow in an emergency etc
