thought i would clean the scuttle vents as there was a ton of mud and leaves in the scuttle inside. jacked up removed wheel and part of arch liner, there the vent outlet stuck behind a black box which i now find out is a carbon canister.
Never had one or heard of one !  what does it do ?  anyway  sods law again  the scuttle drains on both sides were clean   couldn't believe it. You don't have to remove the entire arch to access the outlet  just the part covering it, i found this out after removing the wheel  as i did the other side by simply turning the wheels and you can then access all the bolts to allow enough of the liner to be pulled back to access the vent so saving a good amount of time.

The normal function of the carbon canister/ canister purge solenoid is to allow the fuel tank to vent (to prevent excessive pressure buildup in the tank) without discharging fuel vapour fumes to atmosphere.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

Just to add to what you have said Paul the fumes in the tank are allowed to pass through the solenoid valve and into the engine but only at certain throttle openings.
