Was going to check the cabin filter but need to remove wipers on this model, the nuts seem solid so have left some penetrating oil on them,  should there be a protective plastic/rubber cap that goes on top of the nuts save this rusting on ? i don't seem to have any if there are.

No, they are exposed to the rain etc and if the nuts are that bad you'll find the arm's are probably also welded in place! Plenty of penetrating oil and copious amounts of wiggling should free them :D

while looking at the removing scuttle job page i found this,,  it seems to be a nut cover over the wiper arm nut to protect it, so it must be fitted, unless the photo contributor fitted one of his own.

Interesting, if it is an original fitment then it never made it onto the parts diagram. Mine certainly doesn't have any fitted.

The cap in question in that picture looks very much like the blanking caps fitted over the top two headlight mounting screws on the Mk2.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

That looks like the nut cover over my top headlight mounting bolts

[attach=1]

maybe that then    a clever use of a different part

Ha, yeah I'd forgotten I'd done that and it is indeed the headlight top screw caps. I never liked the fact it didn't have a cover so I used those BUT they don't stay in place - you need a dab of silicone or some DS tape to keep it there :)
