Hi I am a newbie ,this is my first posting as i am unable to find an answer to my problem,
When I first start after15 seconds the cooling fan starts up at full speed, and stays  like that  when i swich off engine the fan runs a few seconds more and then stops,A local garage had a check an told me there were not any fault codes showing,The air con has been fully checked and operates ok, are there any other things I might try, the temp stays at 90 when warmed up,I can drive for 60 miles or more without problems Iam worried the Fan  might burn out operating at that speed, :(

Hello and  welcome5

What diagnosis did the garage perform?
Have a check at the radiator sensor wiring plug make sure no wires have broken off.

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

Hi all seems fine on that check, might there be a relay that has stuck on?in which case it might not show up as a fault..

There is a relay under the battery fusebox

Was Vagcom/VCDS used for diagnosis? generic code readers wont scan all modules in these cars.

Hello, do not have details on what type of system used to check for fault codes..
Have contacted Ford Garage  >:( Tech Guy said might be model in fan  :( Big bucks for new fan ) told me to try that nice easy to change coolant sensor  :'( as the one at  bottom rad has been checked with a new one and did not cure problem,,

Looks a simple enough circuit, the fan is fed a supply from the engine bay fuse box and has its own ground. (Pins 1 and 4 - the big chunky ones). Then it looks like its got a supply from ignition on (Pin 2). It appears (Pin 3) is a ground which is either made or not made to put the fan on - controlled by the ECU.

It looks like it shares the temperature sensor - you say the dash one reads correctly? You 100% sure its running full speed, if the A/C is on then it should be running at 1/2 speed all the time - what happens when you turn the A/C system off?

Fan still runs at full speed  with aircon switched off.

Cooling fan run on may be active, could simply be faulty coolant sensor, would need to check temperature readings in vagcom to see if they concur with temperature gauge.

Thanks for advice mate ,have change the easy coolant sensor below the pump, dont know how a fella with big hands would manage  ;D Fan still runs full speed, have had enough now ,have booked it in with my local garage,he is a good guy will not rip you off...will be nice to see a result when he is done ..

:) Hello Can any body explain where the  Cooling fan control unit is, it is not under the battery tray,There is only one fan fitted  ??? thanks..

I would imagine it's in the same place as my '54 plate 130 TDI (with single fan), not under the battery tray but actually mounted in the fan cowl at the top on the nearside, it's not easily spotted from the top because the plastic cowlings that shield the battery and battery fusebox obscure it.

Oh its that simple to locate then ?I was told by a Ford tech guy that the complete fan had to be changed, because it was a in the fan , Do you think this effects the speeds or just switches the fan on? ???

Any one know where I can obtain a pic of the cooling fan control unit :-*

Of the parts diagrams that Greg linked earlier, this is the one that's going to be relevant to the 130ps TDI with single fan unit, as you can see number 13 is the control unit assembly, so it's certainly listed as a separate part from the actual fan cowl and motor, don't put 100% faith in the part number that it's given in that diagram if you need to order it though! If you are able to get an engineering number off of the old one you may be able to pick one up in a breakers, I imagine a new one from Ford will be shockingly priced as these things often are!

Thanks mate will be having a look in Breakers Yardj :'(

did you ever find the cause?
