hi ford m8s trouble getting reverse 96 tdi

I seem to get all forward gears ok but when I try to select reverse just cant get it without a fight bought a new gear shift holder an fitted it now its a bit sticky through all the gears an still find it hard to get reverse do I need  to adjust the cables many thanks doaky456

There is a special tool for adjusting the linkage or can be done by the trial and error method in the Haynes manual.
