some time 1st gear will go to reverse gear

Hello every one, new to here, and new galaxy mk3

Its 2007, 2.0 TDCi, Zetec, Manual,

As you know, if I need to put in reverse gear, I need to pull the thing on the gear bar,

then i can go to R position.

But some time i want to put in first gear,

it will accidentally go to reverse gear without pull up the gear bar, which is very dangerous.

Does anyone know why this happen and how can fix it?

I would suggest having a look at the selector cables attached on top of gearbox make sure they are clamped correctly.

also you can unscrew the gear knob pull up the plastic trm and gaitor and check to see if the black plastic stopper that stops it going into the reverse position isnt broken
