Galaxy Mk3 2007 (2.0 TDCi) Oil Filter

Hi, I'm a newbie to the forum but have owned a Galaxy Mk3 2007 2.0 TDCi for a few years now.  I am planning to do my first DIY interim service this year, and have been familiarising myself with things under the bonnet, as well as studying the reference guides on this forum.

One thing I have noticed (as also on postings elsewhere), is that is claimed that the oil filter is 'hidden behind the oil filler tube' - and yet, to me, it seems to be on good view just below and to the right of the fuel filter. (Photo below).

Or am I looking at completely the wrong thing?

im lead to believe that the filter is underneath and requires the under tray to be removed to gain access to it?

Yes that is your oil filter cap, your 2007 version is more accessible than the later version which has the inlet/plenum chamber directly above the cap which needs a special cranked tool to remove the cap, looks like you can get a socket on yours.

chris was i having my chained pulled then when i had my oil/filter changed.i was told it was underneath?

You would still need to remove the undercover to get to the sump drain plug but the filter is definitely accessed  from the top.
The difference between the early and later engines that the early 2.0 diesel the oil filter although it's in the same position is more easily accessible because of the shape of the manifold and the oil filler is toward the right hand side.

yeah i know about the drain bung,good to know coz next time i might try using the oil pump and do the job myself.

As you know our MK3 is a Motability car but if it were my own I would cut a neat hole in that undercover as the drain plug faces downward and could be removed with a socket.

yes that is the oil filter the top i think is a 27mm socket and a long extension and it will unscrew, you have to unplug some of the wires above it so you can wiggle it out. can be a bit messy but if you leave the sump plug off and keep bucket under it, undo the filter but dont remove it and most of the oil in the filter empties via the sump. hope it helps

I can't get mine off with a socket, it starts to distort the plastic. Any tips? It is anti clockwise to remove isn't it?

Is there a special tool that doesn't damage the plastic? Feels like it's going to shear off.

There are hexagonal sockets and cranked spanners available.

27mm single hex 1/2 drive socket will do the job nicely & shouldn't damage the plastic.
