Does anyone know if the diesel/fuel filter is in the compartment shown in the picture?

Yes four screws hold the plastic cover remove this to reveal the filter.

Yes! Simply remove the four 8mm bolts and move the semi-circle part towards the front of the car. Unclip the green electrical clip & remove both diesel pipes by gently pushing the white parts in.
Use a 27mm socket (preferably single hex) to unscrew the filter housing & lift out. The filter then pulls straight off.
Refitting is reverse procedure, but you need to use a hand pump connected to the bleed valve on top of the filter housing to lift the diesel back up to the filter.
