Late Mk2 wiper sweep issue

Hi all,

Newbie first post - I hope you can assist with my problem:

I have a 2005 Mk2 2.3 zetec with annoying wipers.

The annoyance is the same symptoms as suffered by Fraz-ktf late last year....

https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy/driver's-wiper-not-full-sweep-stripped-lubed-but-still-the-same-!/msg5249/?topicseen#msg5249

...i.e. the wipers seem not to sweep the windscreen fully.

I have done the following to try and remedy the situation [with no success] :
1.  Removed and greased the spindles - they were not stiff at all
2.  Re-positioned wipers and drive - no change
3.  Pulling the arm when wipers on to make it sweep further - no slack in system - no change.

What did produce a change in sweep angle is switching off the ignition when the wipers are on and moving towards the vertical position - this made the wipers go further [whilst stopping] and sweep the window correctly.

This makes me think the problem is either electrical or brain related.

Question - are the wipers supposed to move from the 'park' position horizontally parallel at the bottom of the windscreen to a slightly higher 'wipe start' position, then wipe the screen only returning to the 'park' position after the wipers have been turned off ?  Mine don't do the park jiggle...

Does anyone have an electrical schematic of the wiper system ?

FYI - I have the factory 'aero' type wipers with the passenger side on top of the drivers when 'parked'.

Thanks for you attention

Cheers

Graeme

Ref. Fraz-ktf's original post where he said it was only the driver's side wiper that was falling short, on stripping my wiper linkage I found that there is an eccentric ball stud on the driver's side spindle ONLY which when altered will affect the maximum travel of the driver's wiper arm- see the last post in this thread. Of course, if both of your wipers are falling short this is unlikely to be the cause, so disregard this post!

Thanks for the reply - I didn't know about the offset ball, however, as you suspect, this will only affect the driver's side and not both.

I really want to see a late Mk2 with the wipers operating to see if/how far the 'park' to lower running position distance is.

Really could do with the electrical diagram - tried loading the Ford etis but I don't have enough memory [nor has my computer].

FYI  I tried to view the library entry "Ford Galaxy - Additional information for windscreen wiper system (MK2)" - only to be greeted with the following error message "The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you."

I can view other library entries without issue.

Will look into it - thanks for the HU :)

Complete.
That was the link in the reference library index post yeah? It was pointing to a topic that's since been merged to the bottom of this one >Ford Galaxy - Windscreen wipers not working or slow < to help keep all info grouped together.

Again, thanks for noting it!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the prompt reply - the setup information is really useful - i'll give it a go and see if it makes the difference.

Do your wipers park parallel and, when you operate the wipers move up  the screen a little and then the wipers operate sweep the screen not only returning to the park position after the wipers turned off ?

Thanks in advance

Graeme

Yup, just like that - to be fair thats a VW trend, they only really park when switched off else they are in a ready state.

I can get you a schematic of the wiper mech as an assembly but not the internal electrics of it...

Thanks for the reply Mark.  I would really appreciate an electrical schematic of the wiper system.

Thank you very much for posting this Mark.
It looks like the park/wipe position logic is all carried out within the motor assembly, however there is one possible lead - do you know what function the conductor 413-01-00-6 into pin 6 of the wiper motor has ?

Yes, that'll be inbound from the instrument cluster and supplying a VSS signal. The wiper mech should drop one "level" when the vehicle comes to a stop. IE, if its on normal wipe it should drop to intermittent, If its on fast wipe it should drop to normal wipe before resuming when the vehicle starts moving again.

OK - thanks for that.  It looks like the problem is inside the motor, I expect it's going to be water ingress and circuit board damage.
I'll pull it out and have a look.
Can you buy spare circuit boards ?

Replacement circuit boards are certainly not available from Ford and I very much doubt VW either, it'll be a complete motor which I've heard it said are stupidly priced so it's gonna be a scrapyard job I'm afraid unless you can strip the old unit and repair it. There's always a few on ebay at more sensible money, though you'd have to make sure the part numbers match.

That's what I thought would be the case - I am going to strip down mine when the weather is a bit nicer and see what's up.

Thank you all for your support - I will report on progress.
