Hi just wondering as to what sort of readings i should be looking for and what readings are bad when using vagcom.

Thxs dave

Give us a clue as to what sort of problem your having.

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

First start of the day it will take several attempts of cranking to get her going as she struggles to start as if there is no fuel. Then for the rest of the day she runs great with no lack of power. Have listened for fuel pump and hear the usual noise. She only seems to do it if left over night or sat for a number hours.

Cheers Dave

Firstly check for fault codes in the engine module, glow plugs may have been an issue in sub zero temperatures but I don't think that's the problem here.
Has this issue started suddenly or been getting gradually worse
Has the cam belt been changed or due for changing and has any work been done that would require belt removal.

No fault codes, cam belt change not due and no work done.
Starting issue has got worse gradually.

Dave

How about slow ingress of air into the low pressure fuel lines? Would be worse first thing after being left overnight.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

When you say cambelts not due how much has it done since last change, I'm thinking the torsion value may be out of limit.
In VCDS go to engine then select measuring blocks I think it's 004
Check this with the engine idling and report back with the figures.

004 reads as follows

903/min, 5.0 dtdc, 4.6 to 5.1 cf and the last box shows 0.6cf to 1.7cf

Done with lite so hope this helps

While i was sat  looking at readings i did notice a little white smoke which got worse when i revved her.

Thxs Dave

Will do some comparison checks when my daughter comes back with the car
Is yours the 115ps engine

Yes chris you are correct 115 it is and thank you very much once agaian :)

Just out of curiosity could this be related to badly fitted injector seals as 2yrs ago i had the copper seals replaced then 1 yr later had to have two injectors and full set of seals replaced, as to the first part to my knowledge they did not replace bolt for tensioning plate or cam bolts. How important are these and should they have been replaced

Replacing bolts in high stress area's is always advisable, the problem with the seals is not twisting them when fitting as this can cause leaks at a later date, this usually ends up with Diesel leaking into the engine oil so a sudden rise in oil level would be seen.

Hi Dave
Readings on mine

Engine Speed.  Specified start of injection.  Specified injection duration.  Synchro Angle
    861 RPM                        0.0                                          5.7                             1.6
                                1BTDC-2ATDC                                  5-7cf                         -3  +3

So comparing yours and mine your specified start of injection is outside it's limit

Any ideas as to what could be the cause ? or how to fix.

I would be checking the timing/replacing belt

Dave

Well had it in garage and they said timing was correct and no fault codes found suggested it might be the tandem pump as starting issue is only when parked up hill, they had it starting all day and left it over night still started first time on level ground i also told them it starts first time when parked downhill.

Could this be down to the Tandem pump as suggested ?

Dave

That would suggest that fuel is running back to the tank (you didn't mention the issue was when facing uphill)
Still puzzled by why timing showing out on VCDS.
Tandem pumps are mostly trouble free and are over Ã,£300, if fuel is running back to the tank you need to determine whether it's running back through the supply pipe or the return pipe.
Also check the plastic valve on top of the fuel filter any signs of wetness there could indicate a leak where may draw air  in once engines switched off.
You could try experimenting with switching the ignition on and off several times before attempting the starter, this should make sure the fuel system is fully primed before starting.
