Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the cause of my clutch pedal suddenly staying down in an almost engaged position? (less than 2 inches from a fully engaged position)

1 - It first occurred after doing a 70 mile stretch of motorway .

2 - I then tried to dip the clutch pedal but it was resting in a position unusually low down to the floor.

3 - I figured out that I could use my foot to manually lift the pedal back up to the normal position but the problem keeps happening quite frequently.

???  :5:

Initially, I thought it was probably due to a seized clutch cable but i see that the clutch pedal directly operates a push-rod mechanism onto what I think is the master cylinder, so no 'old fashioned' clutch cables to be seen anywhere !!

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated - thanks!!

Peace and love, peace and love.

Have you lost fluid from the reservoir/signs of leakage inside by pedals or from the bottom of gearbox bell housing/clutch housing.

Hi Skippythompson,
Sorry to say this but son in laws Mondeo had a similar problem where when he pressed the clutch pedal it would stay down and not return. It didn't happen every time but was getting worse. It didn't lose brake/clutch fluid in the reservoir. What was happening was the DMF was starting to fail and because of the vibration it made fluid leak past the seals in the concentric slave cylinder. Very shortly the DMF started making noise when idling. The cure, a new flywheel and clutch. I hope I'm wrong. Steve

Thanks for all your comments, they have been extremely helpful, I'm going to have a closer look for fluid leaks now!

I haven't used the car since the trouble, I just parked it on the driveway until such times as I am clued up on the best route for diagnostic/repair as I have been ripped off by garages in the past, guessing wrongly about what needs to be replaced, until the point where they have replaced just about EVERYTHING!!  (a previous car not this one).

Thanks again.

I had similar symptoms - and eventually I discovered that the salve cylinder was kaput and was leaking fluid. One new Slave cylinder later all was well.

Slave cylinder - I had this on mine back in February/March last year.

My clutch is doing the same. Has anybody done this job of renewing the slave cylinder. if so could they please tell me how is the best way of going about it and the difficulty and time involved. My vehicle is a mk 2 1.9 tdi 6 speed 2002 on a 52 plate. This vehicle is very difficult to work on, even filling the brake reservoir is a major operation. Anybody out there that can help would make my day

you need plenty of space under so you can drop the gearbox out. took me about 8 hours to do over a weekend on a mates garages 4 poster.  If you dunny like the access for the brakes you aint gonna like this job  :P
Toot-Toot! Beep-Beep!

If you have a 4 poster ramp then yippee it's easy.  It is a tedious job as there is a lot of stuff to undo and remove before you can drop the box. That said nothing too difficult. The real issue is the weight of the gearbox. If you don't have a ramp then it's bloody hard as the gearbox whilst easy enough to let drop onto something to protect it - when replacing you need to be a gorilla . I used a jack with a flat plate to support the box then had a couple of beefy types to help slot it in.  It is a long job - no special tools just some good axle stands, two jacks ( you need ti support the engine ) and leather knuckles.
