Somethinge else I've just realised is that the headlight washers show no signs of life whatsoever, any ideas which bits to check and how to get to those bits??

Normally I think the headlamp washer jets use purely the water pressure produced by the separate feed pump to lift the jets from their rest position in the bumper, there are no electrics involved in the jets themselves (unless they have heaters like the windscreen jets to prevent freezing in cold conditions), if you are getting no water delivered to the jets themselves then they won't lift, the water pressure is provided by a secondary pump on the washer bottle (it's separate to the one that does the screen washers)- I think it's number 8 on this diagram. See if the pump is running firstly, if it is, pull the outlet pipe off and see if it's delivering any water.

Ok, would the relays and fuses be easier to check first? If so where are they located? Plus what is easiest way of accessing pump and reservoir? Taking headlight out?

The reservoir for the headlamp washers is the same one as used by the screen washers which is most easily accessed by unscrewing the front end of the nearside front wheelarch liner (put the wheels on full right hand lock first). There should be two pumps fitted into the reservoir- the rear one should have two outlet pipes and is for the screen washers, the forward one is for the headlamps.

According to the owners handbook the headlamp washers should only work when the headlamps themselves are switched on and the front windscreen washers are operated- I take it that yours aren't doing that? You could check for blown fuses (the fusebox is behind the access panel to the right of the steering wheel below the headlamp control switch), otherwise get somebody to operate the front screen washers with the headlamps on and see if any water is coming out of the forward washer pump with the pipe pulled off (check if you can hear it running first).

Ok will have a go at accessing reservoir in a bit. Are there a couple of relays i can check?  miraz mentions a them in the hid light section on here..

I'd check to see if the pump runs first before going looking for electrical faults, if the pump isn't running and there's no power to the pump then go down that avenue! I take it your windscreen washers are all working ok?

Yeah windscreen jets work fine..

Firstly, they work (or should work) with the headlights on and the front wash/wipe activated. It wouldn't be the first time someone's said they aren't working because the headlights aren't on :)

Secondly, in this case I would check the fuse first. Its very common for it to have blown as the pump is so powerful it only takes a little bit of ice in the tank or washer to cause it to pop. Its a dedicated 15amp fuse IIRC, I just can't remember the number right now.

Is that fuse 11 next to steering wheel? Pump def not pumping, water just pouring out when i take hose off and no squirting at all when windscreen washed, (with lights on ), hope it is fuse because just tried to unhook pump and that seems well fiddly unhooking elecs! That pump must be powerful because i prized up the light washers and they are well stiff!

You are a lovely lovely man! Fuse eleven has blown i don't have a 20 amp to replace at the mo but will grab some tomorrow. Hopefully that'll be that sorted and i don't have to smash my knuckles to bits getting the pump out. Thank you very much sir.. I will shout once tried it. Cheers

Great stuff, thanks Mirez, working perfect.. Only thing now is I've managed to completely lock the stereo/sat nav system cos i pulled out the fuse yesterday and the code that came in the hand book was wrong one, did it twice now completely locked...  Swung by fords and he looked perplexed because its not one the normal bug buttoned ford double dins.. Any ideas on that would be great too..

Is it the factory nav unit? If so its a Ford Branded, VW MFD1 - made by Blaupunkt

Yes its factory fitted.. Ford lad pulled it out to find serial number but wasn't sure which of the several numbers it might have been - any clues to which number it is?
