Oil change with filter

Hi,
Mk3 Galaxy 2.0 tdci. Just bought, 9000 miles. Not due for a service until July, but oil looks a bit dirty, so safety first, I want to change the oil and filter.
Could anyone please confirm: Oil filter is paper type not canister.
Filter access is by removing top engine cover, plastic cover on filter?
4litres of 5-30 synthetic will be enough to refill.

Yep sounds right the oil filter is hidden behind the oil filler tube just unclip and move to one side.

wish mine was located there,on the smax the under tray has to come off.

Sump plug out, oil going into old 5 litre oil container.....aaargh! about half a litre overflowed into pit! Cat litter time.
The refill took a full 5 litres to get back to top of dipstick.
Couple of days later some clown hit offside door mirror, black section underneath cracked but repairable, luckily won't show unless looking under it. Anyone know if the painted top section and under section can be bought separately?

You can buy the painted covers separately (thesedays I think you can buy them from Ford pre-painted instead of just in primer), as well as the mirror glasses and the side repeater/puddle lamps- see here. If the main plastic body of the mirror is broken though, it'll be a complete unit I'm afraid.

I'm about to do this - 2.0 TDCI 10-reg but quite nervous, it seems a bit more fiddly than I'm used to.

Can I get to the sump plug without taking the under cover off?

The filter I've been supplied is 69mm, is that right?

no i dont think you can,you could try an oil pump but as i understand the filter is under neath the cover has to come off anyway.
i paid a garage Ã,£30 and supplied the oil and filter when mine needed doing,saved me doing it.

Cover came off easy enough and it was good to have a look. There was a little oil on the bottom of the engine, not much, but enough to make me a bit concerned. I'll clean the area and see if any more appears, anything else I should do? Only just got the vehicle (second hand) and have one month engine and gearbox warranty from dealer. Should I take it back?

I simply couldn't get the the oil filter cover off, and having drained the sump I had to refill so I could move the car. I've ordered a tool to get the filter cover off and will do that before making any journeys but it's a shame to have had to start the engine with clean oil and an old filter. I preferred the old disposable filter casings.

Where is the oil leakage that you can see? Can you tell where it has come from? Could it be residual oil from a previous oil & filter change or is it coming from somewhere else like sump gasket, crankshaft main oil seal etc?

I can't see - in fact it was getting a bit dark when I was doing this last night. It doesn't look like it's enough to drip, it was more of a thick, but liquid, black build up. It's not near the sump, it's mostly in the area where there's a small cutout on the under-cover, which makes me wonder if it's an intentional outlet of some kind. I'm going to clean it up prior to a 200m journey this weekend, then look again to see if it's coming from anywhere obvious.

think you need to be a tad cautious here,your trying to see if you have a leak and if you start messing around with anything and then try to claim on any warranty THEY may decline any help.be careful what you do.

I see your point, but just cleaning the engine a bit to see if there's fresh oil should be OK shouldn't it?

i would give the dealer a call with your concerns and see what they suggest?
