I have a 53 reg MK2 TDi Ghia, it says in the manual there is one, but the one in mine doesn't light up when I start the engine - I heard that the glowplug doubles up as the warning light - is this correct?

Yes. You are correct.

That is correct and tends to flash as opposed to staying on when there's a problem.
