Should I have a light under the hood? My old mondy did along with me Passat so wondering if there is one and the bulbs knackered? is it easy to fit if not?
Toot-Toot! Beep-Beep!

There is no light on mine or two others that I've seen

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

Theoretically it should be easy enough to add one as you already have a bonnet switch and there is an unused position on it. You'd need to see if its a NC or NO contact but either way should be workable if you really want to add one... but why?

The early MK1's had a light fitted in the bonnet. In mine is sadly no light, just the hole for it.
But I don't see a place on the bonnet off my MK2 for such a light.
I own a MK1 1999 2.3 DOHC Ghia & 2003 1.9TDI Trend.

I just had a look at the diagrams and there is a engine compartment light for the mk1 (connected to fuse7 -  5A) but I cant find one in the diagrams of the MK2.

Orbis, you got a photo of the hole? Just curious where it sits?

I'm not at home by my car right now so I can't take a photo.
But I've found some photos on this forum:

And here you can see that it's the same light as the lights in the boot.

Humm interesting, that looks to be the same light as the boot area. I'm unclear though, that looks like a retrofit they are talking about? I can't imagine Ford/VW not using a sealed unit under the bonnet...

I know, it looks weird to me too that it's not sealed. And I can see that the link doesn't work so here is the picture anyway.
It has also the same part number as the lights in the boot. (that information is on the site)
The light is also mentioned in the owners manual. 5W festoon bulb.
The engine compartment light is number 8 on the picture.

It looks like it's the drivers/passengers footwell lights in the main cabin to me.

Now you say it...you could be right.

But this is what the site says of number 8: 'light. light; luggage compartment light; footwell light; engine compartment lighting; rear'

And the hole is oval so I don't think it fits another light.

Can you describe where the hole is in the engine compartment.  The one in the link looks like it has grey carpet next to it, which makes it more likely to be in the passenger compartment under the dash.

The hole is located right under the lock pin/hook at the inside of the bonnet. And the grey carpet you see is the insulation at the bonnet. It's only on the MK1. And I know that the pictures are too close-up.
