Heater blowing cold air

Guys hope you can help out as the weather turns colder I really need to get this fixed!

I have a 2002 Galaxy 2.3 Zetec that has been a brilliant workhorse and has served us proud. As it nears the end of it's uselful life i'm trying to eke out yet another winter. Several months ago the old bus was due an MOT and one of the few things it faied on was intermittent brake lights. The local garage said that would be no problem and promptly took it away to fix - turned out later it been related to the tailgate switches or wiring (not too sure which) and they'd had to do some soldering and/or re-wiring. The brake lights now work great, as does the rear screen wiper that had failed years before! but we soon after realised that the clock had stopped and, althought the fan runs at all speeds, the heater only blows out cold air. To be honest i was relieved to have another 12 months ticket and wasn't overly bothered about the lack of a heater (obviously I use another car to get to work and rarely use the Galaxy!). However, as the weather is turning my wife is complaining more about the lack of heat in her car.

Any ideas really appreciated

Hello R1gger  welcome5

What you need to establish is whether coolant is flowing through the heater, first check though make sure coolant is between the minimum and maximum mark.

Now you need to locate the flow and return hoses where they pass through the bulkhead.

Look through the link below, instructions for changing pollen filter.

(photo shows TDI version, yours will look slightly different)

https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/galaxy-pollen-filter-removal-and-replacement/

In the third photo down you will see the two hoses that pass through the bulkhead.

These hoses should be hot when engines up to temperature regardless of the heater control settings.

Come back when you have checked this.

Hi there Chris - many thanks for the prompt response!

I left the car at my local garage for them to check it out while I've been away over the Xmas break. They assure me they checked the pipes and they were getting hot and the problem must be elsewhere - what would the next steps be if the pipes are hot?

I took my car back without them completing the job as I decided it the costs were going to start to spiral out of control.......

Can I clear a couple of questions with you:

1) Is the clock now working or not?
2) Is the rear heater putting out hot air and its just the front one that isn't?
3) As its a Zetec I think I'm right in saying its got the manual "rotary" control unit and not the LCD version?

If the clock isn't working then check Fuse32 isn't blown, it feeds the clock but also has a feed into the manual HVAC controller (strangely its not present on the Climatronic version) although its purpose isn't clear from the wiring diagram.

As soon as I read the question about the clock I thought you might be onto something - went out and checked and fuse 32 was in fact blown. Just replaced it and what do you know everything is now working exactly as it was.

Fantastic bit of work Mirez - my wife and I were in the process of thinking it was time to condemn the car to the big scrap heap in the sky.

Many thanks for your help - keep up the good work.

R1gger :)

Just been out in the car and it is still working fine however, the amber ABS light has come on now - could this be related?
