How do I fit a new auxiliary belt to my Galaxy mk3 2.0 l TDI ?

Hello  welcome5

You need to turn the spring loaded adjuster in a clockwise direction, once the two holes line up (see inset 2) insert a 4mm dowel or pin, this will hold the tensioner back while you slip the new belt on.

thank you do you think the belt should have broken without any signs of fraying or could it be one of the components seized?

It is unusual for it to break for no reason, I would suspect the aircon pump first but any of the driven pulleys seizing could cause the belt to snap.
Was there any tell tale shrieking noises before the breakage?

Try spinning all the pulleys for smoothness, the aircon pump has a clutch fitted to enable the switching on and off of the aircon, with the aircon off the pulley will freewheel on the pump shaft, when aircon is on (clutch activated) the pulley clutch and shaft will rotate as one.

The alternator pulley is also a one way clutch and prevents reverse loading on the belt, this is easy the check with belt off, carefully insert a screwdriver through the slots in the alternator body to locate the fan blades, while holding screwdriver against fan blades turn alternator pulley anticlockwise, if it turns smoothly with just a slight resistance then it's OK if you cannot turn it you will need a new clutch pulley.

Thank you once again I'll try those before I attempt to fit the new belt

i tried to fit the auxiliary belt but found I had one less pully than in the diagram since realizd I have a duotorq engine with climate control does this make a difference?

I think you must also have electronic power steering have a look at this pic, this one is the same as mine.
