Reconditioned Turbo vs New Turbo

My Galaxy goes into limp mode sometimes - mainly on motorway

I get the error code - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17965/P1557/005463

My Mechanic has suggested I need to get my turbo reconditioned as it - he suggested Midlan Turbos

Its a Garrett Turbo - GT1749V - Garrett say it cannot be reconditioned, but then their own Distributor offers this service !!!


I need help on:-

a) whether I should get it reconditioned or not
b) would a new turbo not be better than re-conditioning the existing one
c) If I do get it re-conditioned, can anyone suggest any good company
d) can anyone suggest whether it can be any other problem

Fairly common, especially if you do a lot of short, low speed journeys and/or start stop driving. Probably about a 5% chance you need to replace the turbo instead it just needs a clean out. Have a read in the reference library as how to do this has been covered, or if its only doing it rarely at the moment, get the car fully up to temperature and then do 2 to 5 full throttle acceleration runs in 2nd and 3rd gear going to the red line each time. This exercises the turbo vane mechanism.

Only if the seals are leaking is it really necessary to replace the turbo, cleaning is the best option but try the Italian tune up first but only if your cam belt is in good condition.

some people have suggested using Mr Muscle to clean EGR valve and Turbo.... does this work ? would it cause any damage ?

I used oven cleaner to do inlet manifold
Oh and the local garages jet wash(they werent happy):-)

what if the limp mode starts again.... any suggestions

If it starts doing it again quite soon after then the vanes are gummed and need cleaning (see the RL post by Chris).

Generally its stop/start, short town driving that causes the problem so try and do a long journey every now and then and use a bit more of the rev band then normal once in a while.
