Run on pump & aux heater - questions

Hello,

I discovered the forum a few days ago and I like it very much.
I'm the owner of two Galaxy's (MK1 & 2) and as I like these cars very much I won't leave the forum soon. :)

So this is the story:
I removed the aux heater totally (coolant lines also disconnected), installed new glow plug, glow plug screen and new gaskets.
After I refitted the aux heater there was of course air in the system but it didn't disappear. Then I found out that the run on pump didn't work.

I searched the fuse of the pump in Ford-TIS and it was Fuse 9 (5A) (at least I think it's that fuse). Then I saw that there was no fuse 9 so I refitted one. But still no working pump.

Then I found out that there was 12V at the connector off the pump (even without fuse 9). So the pump is broken. (Probably the brushes).

When i pushed hard against the connector, the pump did work, but the air in the system didn't disappear and the level in the coolant tank didn't lower.

So now i'm going to replace the brushes in the motor of the run on pump.

Questions:
1) What is fuse 9 for and what is the right fuse for the run on pump?
2) how can I get the air out of the system?

Many thanks ;)

Hello  welcome5

The pump gets it's feed from the radiator fan relay, fuse 2 or3

I find it easier to get air out of the system with the car facing uphill or car raised at front end.

The system should be self bleeding but check that a small amount of coolant is returning back to the bottle through the small hose on top of bottle, squeezing the large hoses also helps removing the air, leave the cap off while the car is warming up to normal temperature.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'll try it when I've replaced the brushes.

Today I finally replaced the brushes on the run on pump and it works fine again.  The air is already out of the coolant system. I also put the fuse of the aux heater back into place.

But when I moved the car just out of my garage, the aux heater started already and the temperature on the display was 12Ã,°C.

Isn't this temperature too high for the aux heater to start?

mine used to start around that temp aswell.

Hi Orbis,
I,ve known my Aux heater be on at 10.5degC which is just over the 10, but I have also fitted a switch in the circuit that goes to the temperature sensor which is behind the removable bulkhead cover clipped onto the windscreen wiper mechanism. This means I can normally have it switched off and only put it on if the journey would be long enough to make it worthwhile.
My auxillary coolant pump has also recently stopped working and I have ordered some brushes to fit. Do you have any advice or tips for fitting them. Steve

thanks for the answers  :)

@ steveo59:
To fit the brushes, i've followed the steps from the FAQ (link below):

https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/galaxy-replacing-the-run-on-pump-brushes-%28tdi-and-v6%29/

This is a good method. I can also recommend to clean the inside of the motor with a vacuum cleaner as it's full of dust of the old brushes.

Good luck!

Hi Orbis,
Thanks for the link. I had read this before but only as a guest before I joined the forum, it makes such a difference being able to see the pictures now as well. Thanks for the tip about vacuuming it out. My brushes arrived today so I'll probably tackle it at the weekend. Steve

my heater comes on right up to 14 degs!

Just a quick question, will my 1.8 20v Turbo have a Run on Pump. Its just on long runs I notice a whirring type sound for a good few minutes after turning the ignition off which would seem to indicate it has?

Yup that'll be the run on pump, along with all the TDI's - the V6 and 1.8T also have them :)

Its only really because the TDI's aux heater dies when the pump stops that peoples question them. When they die on the petrol engined cars nobody really notices but they are important for keeping hot spots away after switch off.

I think it's safe to say the run on pump is fitted to all Mk2's but only Mk1 TDI's with the independent heating option but I stand to be corrected :)

Its not fitted the Mk2 2.3 which makes up a large percentage of total Mk'2s.... so no, not safe to say that at all :)

Having only ever worked on one 2.3 galaxy in my time is why I had my doubts on this one but there's to many references to this on other sites for it to be coincidence one even links back to this site in our Rl.

Perhaps other members on here with the Mk2 2.3 Ford engine can confirm if they have the auxiliary coolant pump (run on pump)
