VW Touran (Mk1) - Radio Removal

I set about removing the radio on our Touran (2005 build Mk1 version) for the purposes of seeing how difficult it would be to retrofit an aux. input socket as these radio units were not factory fitted with them (our basic 'S' model Touran was supplied from the factory with an RCD 300 single disc CD player/ radio), however, this is a topic for another thread. The radio is fairly easy to remove however some care needs to be taken when removing the overlying trim/ fascia panel. As can be seen in the below image, the finish on some of the buttons of the unit has worn off quite badly and the finish on the fascia is also worn in places, unfortunately VW seem to like using some kind of coating over the base plastic of certain trims including these to give them the final colour but it is not durable in the long run for things that get handled a lot and this kind of thing is the result, which I find rather poor for a brand with a reputation for build quality.


To remove the radio, firstly the whole trim panel from the bottom of the centre air vents down (which also covers the heater controls- which are manual on our Touran) needs removing. There are no screws securing this trim, just clips. To avoid damage to the trim or surrounding dash, I'd recommend either using a set of plastic trim remover tools such as these or even a plastic ruler once you've got 'underneath' the trim to aid in levering it off without marking/ gouging it or the dash. The below image shows the cover panel removed and the 4x size 20 torx screws (arrowed orange) that secure the radio into the dash, and also the positions of the metal spring clips (which are yellow in colour- one of which is arrowed red below) which the plastic cover trim clips in to- there are 8 of these clips in the dash and corresponding lugs on the trim itself. The heater control dials will all stay put in the heater control panel in the dash when the cover trim is removed, they will not be pulled off with it.


Once the cover trim is removed and you are left with a scene similar to the above picture, you can remove the 4x 20 torx headed screws arrowed orange that secure the radio into the dash, and then pull the radio forward to access the wiring connectors at the back. Finally disconnect the wiring connectors- as can be seen in the below image, the main connector is arrowed yellow and two smaller connectors arrowed blue* (the main square connector has a pivoting broad locking 'bar' at the rear which when released will allow the whole connector block to be pulled out):

(*-depending on the equipment level and model of radio- or even sat-nav- fitted there may well be variation in the number of cables and connectors going into the back of the unit)

There should also be a manufacturer label on the unit somewhere (it was on the right hand side face of this particular unit) with serial number, VW part number etc. There was also a little sticker on the top face of the unit identifying what the various pins in the connector block were for:
