Towing tell tale light

Hey all.  Picked up my new Touran q couple or months back which is awesome and I'm very happy however I've just hitched up the caravan for the first time and whilst everything works on the van I have no indicator on the dash or beep to tell me the indicators are working? It's a factory fitted hitch.
VW said you no longer need one but I'm sceptical, can anyone confirm that first me?

Most modern cars extend the 'bulb-out' feature onto the trailer so you get a warning if a bulb ISN'T working as opposed to when it IS.

New VW's since 2006ish have been using a controller that can do this so as long as you get a bar fitted at factory (or a factory bar retrofitted) then it will display on the cluster instead of needing the additional light.
