Broken front spring

sods law again,, soon as we start talking about selling the car it starts playing up,  sorted misfire,  then the good lady says  theres a funny noise from the wheel.

Yes,  broken front spring. so. is it ok to just replace the one ? front pass side. we only do 500 to 900 miles a year pottering around so dont want to incur not needed expense but still need to be safe.  cars done 76,000

not a job i can do at roadside so off to local gargae in morning.

It's not considered good practice to replace only one spring, ideally you'd change both on the front axle at the same time to preserve ride height and ensure even suspension response on the axle in question.

Having said that, if you had a car under warranty and a spring broke would the manufacturer/ dealer follow good practice and renew both springs for you under warranty? Highly doubt it!

ah well   bloke at garage who is usually good  said very few have 2 fitted,  cost me Ã,£212  due to seized up top nut taking an age to get off but luckily they saved the strut.

Yes, the 'water trays' that are the front top mount cover plates and their accompanying corrosion are a frequent cause of strife on these vehicles, last time I changed my pollen filter I checked mine and they weren't looking too good (I did marinate 'em in WD40) so I'm not looking forward to the inevitable day when I need to take mine out! Gonna be a case of a dremel with a wire brush attachment, jenolite pre-treatment on the threads beforehand and if all else fails chopping through the top plate and damper rod with a disc cutter!

No, as you say very few vehicles will have both springs on an axle changed at the same time if only one has failed, usually for time and cost reasons.
