Reading the build date from old parts can be especially useful when it comes to sourcing a replacement part or for checking if a parts been replaced before. Most plastic parts have a date stamped on to them where most electrical parts have the date stamped on the label.
Older designed parts will have the traditional grid style where newer parts carry the circular date stamp.

Older Stamp:
A grid is stamped into the part with years running down the side and months running along the top. A dot is placed in each square up to the production date so where the dot's end indicates the build date. In the example below, the last dot is in the first square of 01, indicating a build date of January, 2001

Newer Stamp:
Easier to read then the grid version, the centre numbers either side of the arrow indicate the year and the arrow points to the month. In this example, the numbers are 00 and the arrow points to 09 indicating a build date of September, 2000. This is a perfect example of the above showing the new legend on an older designed part.
