Squealing from 1500rpm upwards

Here we go again, well this problem was there before I swapped the sump but was hoping the hole in the turbo return pipe was the problem, but have remounted turbo hose, and now it's not catching on the driveshaft.
  Basically I have a high pitched squeal that sounds like a slipping fanbelt from around 1500 rpm upwards. It won't make the noise if the car is stationary and you rev the engine, but once driving is sounds horrific and gets worse as the engine revs increase. It seems to be coming from the belt area, so thought possibly fanbelt but the belt has no cracks in it and I figured it would do it stationary as well as underload. I have read in another post that it could be the turbo but again I thought it would do it whilst stationary. So I don't know what to try next. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?  Thank you again. Andy

What your describing sounds very much like the alternator clutch pulley, to test this what you need to do is slip the belt off, now look through the slots just behind the alternator pulley you will see fan blades, now get a suitable screwdriver that will go through the slots now try turning  turning the pulley while stopping the blade turning.
If you can turn the pulley fairly easily anticlockwise but not clockwise the pulley is OK, if you can't turn it either way the pulley is knackered.

You can buy this separately without buying a new alternator (not from Ford) but you will need a special socket to remove the pulley bolt

Thanks for the quick reply Chris, I really need the car for Tuesday so trying to sort the problem quickly. Do you know off hand what sort of socket ill need to buy to remove the pulley if that is the problem. My local gsf car parts have a alternator clutch pulley in stock , so going to check this tomorrow and hopefully go and grab the new one(if they're open on the bank holiday). Thanks

Just out of interest if I give the car a quick run without the fan belt on (I know I won't have power steering) it shouldn't squeal if its the clutch pulley, that's correct isn't it?  Just thinking I can try that as well if I'm taking the belt off to check the pulley

have you had your air con on at all?
as another thing that may well be causing the squeal could be the clutch from the compressor?

No mate, it's got climate control but it doesn't work at present, and when I hit the auto button there's no change in revs so assume it doesn't work, so I just don't switch it on, just let the panel flash for its 15 seconds and then make sure it's off lol.

Just been out to car to check the alternator clutch pulley and that is fine. With a screwdriver holding the fan things I can turn the pulley anti clockwise but not at all clockwise, so that's one of the list. Any other ideas?

to check whether turbo is making the schriek temporarily disconnect this pipe then drive the car and see if the noise has gone albeit the car will feel gutless.

Just to let you guys know the screeching was coming from the rubber turbo to intercooler return pipe. I had tried duck taping it after the driveshaft had eaten it (because I had trouble sourcing a second hand one and was to tight to buy one new), and although the tape was holding obviously air was leaking past it some how causing the screeching. New pipe and quiet as before. Thank you to all those who contributed to this post. :-)
