I have been told it is virtually impossible to change the oil and filter yourself because of the tray hiding the plug and filter. My question is...can I leave the tray off?? or would this cause some damage? Thanks.

All the info is here: https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/reference-library/galaxy-tdi-oil-and-filter-change-(self-servicing)/

Just remove the tray, change the oil and refit the tray. Why would you want to leave it off???
