Hi all, everything has been good since my recent purchase but all just gone wrong. As i was changing down to second gear there was a horrible scrapping noise as i let the clutch out.Now all that happens is if i select any gear it seems to select it ok but if i let the clutch out there's just a grinding noise with no drive.Am awaiting the pick up truck to take to a garage but are there any pointers as to what it might be ?it's a 2004 tdi 130,thanks appreciated.

Hmm ! sorry now I've had a cup of tea and calmed down looks like I've missed this on the common problems, sorry if I've annoyed you and wasted your time  :-\

I'm guessing that means you suspect the drivers side driveshaft has torn its teeth up? Thats what your description suggests is the likely cause, though could be other problems with the driveshafts (I've known the outer one on a Golf to come apart so much it wouldn't drive at all).

Hi ,it looks more like the gearbox output shaft looking at the various symptoms, not really what i wanted to read  :(

Sounds very much like the offside drive shaft to me,best bet is jack offside up put in gear and see how easy the wheel turns

I'd be inclined to agree, the gearbox is usually fine unless the bolt out of the selector manages to get inside. It will make all sorts of dodgy grinding noises if this that as well.

Ok thanks guys will keep you posted
