1.9 tdi galaxy 2000, in 5he receipts for previous work, auxiliary fan fitted, new water pump and thermostat added (wasn't one fitted) so this over heating problem has been going on a while, I've checked blockage non return it's fine, the radiator fan isn't kicking in at 90 so I plan to check it works, after that I'm a bit lost on what to check now..
here's a really confusing one, on a journey expansion tank full, light comes on expansion tank empty, today's fun and games light came on, guage didn't go past 90 light came on, stop, check tank bit low top up, drive another 10 miles light comes on again, is it leaking somewhere crazy I can't see.. it's all pickling my head, no gunk in oil, totally clean, no white smoke nothing for last 500 miles since problems started. thanks for looking

Head gasket.

Common on these engines, combustion gases just creeping through the water ways. If you go to a garage put the gas analyser tip just in the coolant bottle and watch the hydrocarbon reading shoot up.

It over pressurises and the valve in the coolant cap dumps the coolant.

I would put money on it being head gasket,as already mentioned very common on these lumps. They usually donââ,¬â,,¢t show up on the sniffer Test though unless you give it some high revs at time of testing.

I'm not so sure on it being head gasket, there's not one other sign, zero white smoke, (it's just had new MOT, lol if that helps) I've just been reading if it's a sensor issue then the engine management will pick it up, will a eBay special OBD read it, I read something about ford IDS will only pick it up, I'll try the fan in the morning on a loop, another question the 2.8 v6 petrol I have, will fan sensor ect just plug and play on to mine..
ps a mystery on my mot my millage went from 107000 down to 3000 on next MOT, am I right to suspect new engine.. ask loads of questions sorry lol

ha ha ha a few times this been asked about I see.. [emoji848] I get no cold on heaters they blow hot (unless I turn the dial to cold lol)

I had no other symptoms with mine it would just overheat when under load uphill, motorway run etc and would lose coolant from expansion bottle.

I had a similar issue - water would disappear from the expansion thank and no overheating. Eventually it got to the point where it started overheating on short journeys.  It might be worth a try to torque down the head bolts - you never know it might work - unlikely but cheap to try!
On the Square

had sniff test done (all good) but been pointed to the radiator sensor, I've added some rad flush and may do a back flush, crazy car though lol.. down motorway on way back and pushed her 80 plus not 1% over 90.. mad bloody cars

shite meant to ask.. going to add coolant and anti freeze mix, gonna drain rad off lower hose, will this will mean bleeding again I'm guessing AND again when changing rad sensor (I know I should do both at same time)

sorry to be a pain on this, I spoke with a mechanic on this problem and he told me mate of his spent 2 months trying to figure out why it over heats..
I get the part how it's head pickling, I'm gonna take all top hoses off and check non return valve/pipe back flush top flush new rad sensor and HOPEFULLY it's done and after pulling my hair out over this I MAY admit defeat and go with head gasket..
I can't afford to get rid so I'm stuck with this car and I need it badly, at the moment I don't need this stress (grimace smile)

Honestly it is such a common issue I guarantee if you pull the head you will find black staining on face between combustion chamber and coolant jacket.

I checked/changed everything on mine but ended up having head off, personally I would save the money on another coolant change and just whip the head off.

As said  these engines with the way they fail do still pass the sniff test

thanks Johnny, me and my old man had a good look on internet and various problems, noticed same happening with newer galaxy as well, crazy and it's mind blowing that it happens lol, the fella who had fun for 2 months had the head off everything he could try, it STILL over heated, I believe he killed it [emoji23] I'm stuck with her for at least 3 weeks, so hopefully it just ticks along for that time at least [emoji23] mad it's ok for city and some motorway driving plus in this heat. I won't pass on the problem but I just got new MOT as well.. lol I don't know..

The problem is down to the head bolts on these engines stretching with the compression so not clamping gasket enough after several heat/cool cycles.

With mine I was lucky hard and block all good just needed a clean up,then refitted with the 150bhp head bolts and all was good.
If you are able to do yourself it is not massively expensive, head gasket set, timing belt kit, water pump, head bolts, anti freeze, thermostat and oil/filter,rocker arm bolts should cover it. If the injectors are not giving hassle then leave them alone. Also while head off it is ideal time to give EGR,manifold and VNT a clean out👍 I shopped around and got parts with ECP discount reckon 200-250 covered the cost 2 years ago.
