If replacing with a new outer casing and tripod/rollers does it not matter how the shaft /  tripod or outer housing is aligned?

My understanding would be if re-using the existing inner cv joint, re-assembly as it was removed is paramount due to wear and reassembling say at 120degrees out (3 rollers on a 360degree axis-so each roller at 120degrees) may cause issues i.e shuddering at the wheel.

I ask the question as I changed the lower ball joint and yes you guessed it, did not support the driveshaft and out he popped. Pulled the hub about too much, well I assume this is what happened because there is now a shuddering at the steering wheel whilst going along with the gears engaged, no shudder whilst coasting.

Really hoping that no damaged has been caused driving it like that the short distance to try it out.

So do I just need to rotate the shaft 120degrees, try it and see, if it still shudders rotate it another 120degrees. If it still shudders replace the inner cv joint.

The annoying thing is that it failed the MOT on OS ball joint excessive play but after replacing it I realised that it is in fact the NS thats the faulty one. Annoying cos I was thinking at the time of replacing it that the joint seemed fine! Not blaming anyone just annoyed with myself for not checking the other side first! I blame myself for making such a silly mistake.

ok so an update:
removed inner cv boot to expose 'tripod/rollers' and low and behold out dropped a roller so popped it back on the tripod, cleaned out some metal filings and its all back together and for the time being all running fine again.
I may have just been lucky not to have caused enough damage to affect its operation. Well, the clutch is on its way out so sure the cv joint will last long enough before the clutch gives out and at Ã,£800 for the work to be done the car will be getting scrapped, me thinks.

??? 08's seem to average around the Ã,£3500 mark, in running condition.  Many of them are at "change the timing belts now!" mileages, too.  I can't imagine a non-running one would be less than Ã,£800 less than those prices.  Or are you intending to break it yourself?

thanks, but this is posted in the mki & ii section as its for a mk2 '04 plate galaxy and this car certainly isnt worth as much as that working or not!

You'd be surprised how much a well maintained one can go for!
There's a few Mk1's that are genuine scrappers, but there's others that are fetching little under Ã,£2k;
Mk2's even more so!

Ã,£800 for clutch &a dmf kit? Who with? I bought the parts at Ã,£330 & fitting at Ã,£220.

I've done the clutch and belts alone this year since owning mine.
But expensive, but these cars are genuinely the best of the bunch in my opinion. The only thing I'd replace it with would be a transporter!

Ã,£800 was quoted by Mr Clutch. I have to agree that they are great motors just hope we can keep it going!

I think you can do far better than Ã,£800 to be honest,get parts yourself and pay a decent independent to change it for you. Avoid mr clutch though they are not the best and use inferior recon clutches
