i had to replace the entire wing mirror assembly on my galaxy the part was ordered by reg and vin number. however when the mirror arrived the plug was slimmer and longer with 5 different coloured wires to the plug that is already in the car. does anyone know of the colours i should crimp together to get the correct operation, as all the haynes manual colours are wrong and it says there are should only be 3 wire on l/h side mirror and 4 on the r/h mirror. i assume they mean l/h is n/s and r/h is o/s but even that doesn't explain 5 wires in the car when they say 3 or 4 at most?

5 is normal for most cars with electric mirrors and heating (3 for the control, 2 for the heating) so 3?? Which side are you replacing the colours and pin locations vary...

i'm replacing both sides but at the moment i had the n/s off can't remember the colours off hand i'll grab the new mirror and take off the door card again tomorrow

ok so new passenger side mirror has pin 1 black, pin 2 brown, pin 3 blue, pin 4 white, pin 5 red/black
old mirror wiring has pin 4 brown, pin 5 white, pin 6 blue/black, pin 7 black/red, pin 8 brown/yellow.
on the old wiring the solid brown and the white wires go t the heating element

Well the small plug is a Mk1 mirror fitted up to 1998 - Mk2's should all have the larger plug however the pin-outs for the two versions fully configured are:

Large Multi-plug Design: C453

1: Yellow/Red - Fold Motor Supply
2: Yellow/Green - Fold Motor Ground
3: Grey/Yellow - Fold Motor Latched Switch
4: Brown - Ground
5: White - Heating Element Supply

7: Blue/Black - Vertical Adjustment Motor Supply
8: Brown/Yellow - Adjustment Motors Ground
9: White/Yellow - Electro-chromatic Supply (Auto-Dim)
10: White/Brown - Electro-chromatic Ground (Auto-Dim)
Late Sharan's / Alhambra's have an even larger multi-plug with an extra two pins:
11: White/Green - Direction Indicator Supply
12: Grey/White - Direction Indicator Ground

1: Black/Red: Horizontal Adjustment Motor Supply

5: Brown: Heating Element Ground

thanks mirez mine is an early mk2 or even poss a mk1 facelift depends who you listen to so they probably used up the last of the plugs from a mk1

just re read that my wire colours don't match up?

Where'd you get the mirror from? To be honest it sounds like an after market part as very few OEM cables use solid colours, signal wiring (as in this case) are nearly always with a tracer colour as above

from a car breaker he used my vin number to get build details

I'd probably send it back to be honest, its not worth frigging about with as they aren't exactly scarce ;)

they were the only ones local to me that didn't want a fortune  most around here want over Ã,£60 each

looking closer the plug has a volkswagon logo on it maybe i should be looking up a sharon wiring diagram

ok no joy don't suppose you know the sharan wiring do you mirez i noticed on a different site you fitted power fold mirrors from a sharon to your mk2 galaxy
or was it a straight swap

Virtually plug and play for the wiring connectors :)
