Hi all really hoping some can help just bought a mk2 galaxy 2002, with the 1.9tdi auto. it slips when changing from 2 to 3rd take ages an lots of rev but when it gets into 3rd its fine though the rest of the gears, I've been told 90% of the time it just need the transition filter an oil changing and do the oil change a few time to fully flush the box, so 1st is that correct, and which oil to use ATF? dextro 3, and where's the best place to get the filter. Meany thanks! and are the auto boxes normally reliable? I know they are a vw box

   Thanks!

Oh Gaaaaawd, ive just gone through the very same problem rob, my advice would be leave well alone until it really needs doing mate, mine slipped going into 3rd but after the gearbox service it thumped into most gears most of the time, I wished I had left it alone now! oh I ended up having a new (uprated piston) plates and two solenoids in the gearbox (Ã,£700) Ouch!!!
where abouts in the north west are ya from?

Hi tony

Thanks for your reply, I'm in Cumbria. I'm very hands on as I'm a heavy goods fitter, so had read that you have to do a few oil changes until it flushes every bit of old oil out, not sure if this is correct now your saying it made your start to thump [emoji53] mmm what to do!!! [emoji36]

Cheers Rob

eye, mine changes like night and day from the moment the gearbox was serviced, I had TWO oil changes and it made no difference, I took it to a auto gearbox specialist who said he see's this type of thing all the time with these gearboxes, so much so he keeps all the parts in stock! many cars use this type of box as well.
you 'could' try some of the Lucas gearbox fix oil in it maybe? hopefully that might not disturb it too much.
best o luck

Oh dear [emoji53] well I'll mayb chance it an do the fluid an go from there, at the end of the day it was a 700 quid car so don't want to put to much into it, it was cheap for a reason ! [emoji21]

Oh does anyone know exactly which VW box is fitted ? Thanks

It's not vw its a Jatco  JF506e

At least I know what to search for! There bound to be a full Gide on how an what to strip down check. Replace an rebuild ?! Have you done this job your self, and is it something that a competent fitter could carry out even if they have never had a auto box striped down be for,

   Thanks!

i know there's 9 solenoids and they are Ã,£99 each and the uprated piston is at least Ã,£150, I can't remember how much he said the plates were, try the Lucas transmission fix oil first! it 'could' be a cheap fix Ã,£12.95, if it works :)

Yea I think I will be trying that 1st[emoji1] On another note! This is a bit strange I have a friend with a 2005 Galaxy auto ( he is the reason I bought an Galaxy auto!!!'[emoji53]) he has just phoned me to ask how I'm getting on with the fault an to say that his has just develop another fault (this is not going well for auto boxes ?!?![emoji36]) his will only now select 1st an 2nd gear, no dash lights on just won't go above 2nd, any thoughts? I head the fuse box wiring could be at fault or the transmission ecu not telling the box to change gear

  Thanks all!

No not done the job myself apart from changing fluid and for me gave the box a good few years life, but did get the box overhauled by local transmission specialist as I was passing the car down to my daughter I always considered auto boxes a specialised area owing to the cleanliness and special tools and equipment needed, that's not to say a confident person can't do it.

I think Lawmanmx got away pretty lightly with Ã,£700 majority figure usually Ã,£1500 - Ã,£2000 from comments on various forums

I'd second what Chris has said above, if I had a proper overhaul procedure for stripping and reassembling the unit as well as the special tools required (and there are usually several when it comes to autoboxes) and a decent workshop space I'd consider having a go but without that, nope- the screw up potential is huge. Plus those autoboxes are heavy beasts- you'd need help getting the bugger in and out, especially if you're doing it with the vehicle on axle stands!
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

Yea quite agree with you both, I have some luxury  as in the form of a 2 post lift, but is down to evenings and weekends when available. Yea if actually just phone a transmission place in Preston, very helpfully chap how said try the filter an several oil changes an the Lucas oil fix ( even tho he stresst that bottles of fix are Neva a long term solution) but as I only do mayb 6-8k per year it was worth a try, he seemed to think the auto box ecu can do meant strange things but didn't think it would make it "slip" in 2nd an that 3rd was normally the failing on these boxes, but 1k should fix it! So after buying it for 600 an having the road tax for 265 do I really want to drop another 1k into it[emoji53]

It's always worth a try changing the fluid albeit several times, you wont be able to do the filter as it's buried in the box and as said some have had successes others haven't
Check for any fault codes present which may give a clue, the engine also has to be running without problems as the two ECU's work together.

Well decided after having a good look tax is out as of from tomorrow so going to sorn it, going to change fluid few time but been Away last week as the problem has changed! It's now quite rough changing gear an as well as the sloping from 2nd to 3 rd when it comes to a stop it's now banging in drive when your setting off or sitting at lights [emoji30][emoji30]

Well done the fluid flush an refill, no different, so contacted Sussex autos via email , they were very helpfull! I've just copied the email sent to me, the prices my have some discount as I enquire through my work as a motorcycle repair centre,  so the 1st qu I stated that when in drive an stationary  it was banging in an out of drive, an 2nd qu the slipping from 2nd to 3rd,, "Good Afternoon Robert

  Thank you for your enquiry,

From the sounds of the 1st fault it sounds like a solenoid issue on the valvebody, this should hopefully be corrected by the following solenoids.

Pressure Line Duty Solenoid JF506-35-07   Ã,£28.50+vat
2-4 Duty solenoid   JF506-35-06    Ã,£39.00+vat
2-4 Timing solenoid   JF506-35-13   Ã,£32.92+vat

2nd fault sounds like the Reverse piston has possibly cracked.

We can supply a Reverse piston kit this includes the drum, frictions, steels and the seals JF506-29-08   Ã,£79.00+vat

All parts are instock and can be shipped on a next day delivery at Ã,£10.95+vat

Please let me know if you have any other enquires.

Best Regards"

On my second email they offer a repair manual for Ã,£33 + vat, don't suppose anyone found an online free copy ?!

[emoji1][emoji1] so let's see what tomorrow bring!

Oh to add to that did a scan today as well, no codes found in the engine or transmission ecu's [emoji47] so I that good news or bad hmmmm !

[emoji53] thanks for that Lawnanmx! Haha yea looks that way, been in touch with a guy that supply's parts an recons units,  845 to recon my box if I remove it or 1k ish if they take the car[emoji30] he did how ever give me a 3rd option to have a go my self, 3 valves, an the reverse piston kit, an filter and a manual !  For 400,  mmmm apparently it's can be done plenty of photographs an take you time! Tempting very tempting! Oh an if it all got to much give them the box an the parts an they would fit them for. The labour charge. If I do I'll be posting pics of the destruction!!!!!

best o luck pal  ;)  8-)
FORD GALAXY 1.9Tdi Ghia 115

Think I'll need it!![emoji1] it's not my only car,  I've a focus as well so there's no time pressure, just the wife!![emoji16]

have you got any further with it yet Rob?
FORD GALAXY 1.9Tdi Ghia 115

Afternoon! Well yes an no, had the box out, striped it, replaced the high speed/ reverse clutch piston kit, and line duty, 2/4 brake, 2/4 timing valves, then split the box, replaced the filter, rebuilt it all, quite hard lining all the Clutch plates up to get the carriers back in,, any way, all back in an warmed up an fluid topped up, low an behold, no banging in drive no slipping between 2/3!!!! Result!!!!.............

Or so I thought! Now no reverse?!?!?
Contacted Sussex they said there had been a fault after a gearbox rebuild the the brake band had dislodged or the another valve n90 could fail, giving no revers, so back off with the valve cover, another Ã,£85, the valve was faulty, had the correct ohms but had to tap it on the bench to make it work, so again got it up an running, still no reverse,?????? So was then told it would defiantly be the brake band had come adrift, despite not touching it, so yea you guessed it all back out, stopped an Checked, absolutely nothing obviously wrong! It will be going back in tonight..... So watch this space! I took photos all the way though it, tried to upload photos last week but just kept crashing [emoji30]

WOW  :o  fair play to you mate, im sure your perseverance will pay off eventually, I only wished I had Your skills and Nads to attempt such a task, keep us informed  [GL]
and try them pics in two's rather than trying to upload them in a big chunk, I for one will be keen to see Em  :)

Tony
FORD GALAXY 1.9Tdi Ghia 115

Yea will try that, only one I've got on my phone is the box out, but will try an upload more tomorrow, to be far it wasn't as bad as I thought the issue is that nothing actually looks broken,  replaced the high speed / reverse piston an clutches as the piston, so I'm told! Cracks an lets fluid pass hence why it slips between 2nd an 3rd, or the clutch plates deteriorate an brake up, which is what in thinking as happened. As there was lots an bit of black material in side,

Sorry about pic quality, pic wouldn't upload so used phone to take photos of them

Evening all,
Gearbox update!! An it's still not good news,  under advice I was advised to refit all the old solenoids an see if that would regain reverse,, unfortunately not! Back to harsh gear engaging an changing, so at least I know the solenoids I replaced were working well! So it's box back out an check the brake reduction band, even tho it looked fine?!! Will remove it an have a good inspect, not looking forward to this bit 3 times lucky........ I hope!! [emoji30][emoji30][emoji1]

how are you getting on with it Rob? any luck?
FORD GALAXY 1.9Tdi Ghia 115

......... NO! [emoji30] old solenoids fitted, still no reverse, so it's back out agin! Haven't got the time, but hopefully we'll get to it in the next few weeks, going to split the box an take this brake band fully out an check it, even tho I prodded and poked it and it's seemed fine?!?  So here's hoping 3rd times a charm!! [emoji16] or its       [emoji19][emoji379]

gutted for ya pal, mine has never been the same since the gearbox service, even with the Ã,£700 rebuild/uprated piston/rings and 2 solenoids, I wished I had just left it alone and put up with the slippage into 3rd  :'(  you live and learn don'cha   ::)

mine just failed its Mot on the shock top mounts and bearings and 2 front tyres, so they are being done on Thursday, its all pay pay pay at the mo!!!! :(
hey ho! its a brilliant car for camping tho, we have had some great camping breaks in it, so worth it in some ways I suppose   ;) Lol
FORD GALAXY 1.9Tdi Ghia 115

[emoji3][emoji3][emoji3][emoji16] get in!!!!!! We have reverse!! [emoji41][emoji41][emoji41] box back out, found brake band piston out of adjustment by 1.5mm nothing else wrong that I could see, had a stepped washer wrong way round but that was on the high clutch plate, so chuffed!!! [emoji16][emoji16]

Well done  [GJ]  gotpics gotpics
