I got in my mk1 tonight and noticed whilst driving that the clutch clicks when it is released , when almost up.
Does it even when the engine isn't running
Any ideas ?

Can you tell where the noise is coming from- i.e, pedal box area or gearbox?

Sounds like pedal area

In that case I'd suggest getting your head down into the pedal box area and operating the clutch pedal by hand whilst looking for evidence of worn items in the linkage connecting the pedal to the clutch master cylinder, or even a missing clip or dodgy pedal return spring for example.
