hi my central locking has stoped working on all but the drivers door checked fuses and all wires on loom fine also the dead lock light does not come on

I've not got a great deal of experience with these faults but if only the driver's door is locking with the key when operated then I would say there's a good chance the paddles on the lock cylinder that send a lock/unlock signal to the control module and the other latches have broken- I don't think it's an uncommon problem. What happens if you try locking from the boot or passenger side?
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

nothing works passanger side only lock that and boot does nothing

have you checked the wiring in the tailgate?

went through all wires with a multi meter and there is power to all  but still no power to other doors cumfort windows work

Had a look through the wiring diagram for this early MK1 and it shows power supply as being the red and white wire from fuse 30 there are also splice joints in the drivers door and next to B pillar.
This may help with your findings.

fuse 30 ok unlocking the passanger door with the key allso unlocks driver door but nothing else but wont lock it

Early MK1's also have a module under the front passenger seat that may have suffered from flooded footwell, have a look under there see if it's dry.
The anti theft/central locking system is also monitored by the diagnostics, a scan of the system with VCDS may prove helpfull.

I had horrendous problems with the central locking on my 55 plate tdi ghia. Removing the large round door connectors on each door and using the continuity setting on a meter failed to show any faults with the wiring because you can still have continuity with just 1 strand but the functionality of the circuit won't work. Also, it's impossible to tell if the cable is damaged because more often than not, the insulation is fine but the cable is snapped or damaged underneath the insulation. I managed to work out which harness was faulty by removing the door cards and disconnecting the door lock motor on each of the rear doors in turn. With the rear passenger door lock motor disconnected all of the other 3 doors, tailgate and fuel flap worked. Hence this was the offending harness because with it re-connected only driver door, tailgate and fuel flap would lock. I found the best way to repair the harness was to completely remove it from the door and solder in new door lock motor cables behind the grommet (well inside the door) so there's no chance of the problem re-ocurring. System has been working great since. Hope this helps. Chris
