Mk2 parking aids

Hi all, my parking aid has never worked since I bought my galaxy last year. Couple of things I'm not sure about. 1) I have sensors on the front so I presume I have both front and rear warnings as I've read the mk2 had two options low level and high level? 2) when I engage reverse I get a long beep and the switch flashes then beep stops. Would this suggest that the switch and controller under the seat should be working fine and that my problem is either a faulty sensor/s or the dodgey wiring loom at the rear bumper? Has anyone here ever replaced the wiring loom or repaired it and if so can you give me advise as to how I remove the loom? Many thanks in anticipation.

Yes you probably have front and rear.  It only needs one sensor to be faulty for the whole system to shut down.

You can check individual sensors by listening for a ticking/clicking noise at each of them.  No noise = possibly faulty.  You can swap sensors to see if the fault moves with the sensor ( = senosr fault ) or stays with the location ( = wiring fault ).

Your best bet is to get a VCDS-LITE lead from ebay like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-OBD2-II-KKL-ECU-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-LEAD-FD232B-chip-compatible-with-VCDS-LITE-/330752513588?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4d0262d634

Use it with a laptop and the free software linked in the listing and it will tell you which sensor is faulty, and can also indicated the distance each sensor is "seeing".

It'll also let you diagnose the majority of the other electrical systems on car too.

Thanks... Having looked under the bumper I've discovered some of the wires are stripped and broken. Can this be repaired or will I need to buy a new loom?

As long as you have enough wire coming out of the connectors, you can graft in some more and it should be OK.

You will be best soldering some more and putting heatshrink over the join.  As they are pretty exposed you will need to seal them against moisture ingress so they don't  fail again.

if you have some self amalgamating tape this should do the job if not then heat shrink is the way to go.

Cheers guys last question is the loom easily removed from the car?

The rear bumper is easy enough to remove and will make life much easier for you as you can then lengthen the cable to suit. If they wiring has been exposed for a long period of time then its probably oxidised and corroded internally under the insulation which will make it virtually impossible to solder onto.

Strip it apart and peel back the insulation - if the core is a copper colour then you should be fine to repair. If its black then its oxidised and you are better off replacing. Give me a shout if its the latter as I have both front and rear looms for sale.

If it's a generic code reader then no, it will only register engine faults.
You will need a Vagcom/VCDS cable in conjunction with a laptop
