Hi, I have a recently deceased mk2 galaxy and am currently considering an 08 1.8 tdci ghia to replace it. I have been told they are not as good (engine) as the 1.9 PD.  I would appreciate views and look outs from some experienced mk3 people. Thanks!

 welcome5
i have a smax, from the info i have read.basically it has the same engines which are fitted in the mk3,
and there seems to be a few more problems with the 1.8s then the 2ltrs.but that may just be peeps having a bad 1.
personally i wouldnt go for a 1.8 as the mk3 is a big beast which in turn makes the engine work harder.
also consider the longevity of the cam belts iirc the smaller engines need a change a lot sooner the bigger 1s.
hope that helps a bit.

It all helps!  I also hope to get some real mpg info on the mk3, 2.0 and 1.8 diesels. My mk2 gave me 8 years service with very little hassle, the only reason it gave up was coz it got smashed and written off.

Mine is the 2.0TDCI 163ps up until recently I was suffering stalling issues which has now been fixed with a software update albeit can catch you out on the odd occasion.
I still think the MK2 is a better car but of course it's really a VW

Currently doing an average 37MPG that's motorway and town if you want more MPG you need to drive like miss daisy :)

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

im getting on average 35mpg and thats all town driving.
my better half had a brand new smax tdci and even going on holiday up to wales we only ever got low 40s to the gallon.i think these engines get a lot better once everything starts to bed in,my smax was a lot faster then hers and has better fuel economy, hers had 22k on the clock when we handed it back, mine up to now has nearly 110k.

My 6 speed manual 2010 143PS 2.0TDCi Ghia gives me 45mpg but we don't use it for short journeys - we've got a Mk2 petrol for that. Doesn't like like low revs and is easy to stall but has plenty of oomph for overtaking when the the turbo kicks in.
