Engine cuts out when cold

I'd like to Thank every one for there inputs into this forum and the help I have found reading though the discussions.

I joined yesterday and found the answer to my first problem, filling my auto transmission, which has now cured the problem of not moving off when pressing the accelerator.

Today although info was for the MK2 Galaxy was a great help showing how to remove the steering wheel, this was to remove the air bag to rewire and replace the horn switches, worked a treat just remove the two star screws and moved the the air bag to the side to give access to the connector and earth while following safety instructions as shown in this forum

I still have one problem which is the engine cuts out when cold, I have two Galaxy's both 2.3 GLX petrol and use the  manual gearbox one for spares as the gearbox gave out on me over the Christmas period, so swapped MAF and other sensors, bought a new ICV (nothing wrong with either of the old two) and fitted it but it still cuts out when cold and slowing down at lights or at a round about and also the engine hunts when idle.

Could this possibly the automatic choke ??????

Any help would be great fully received

Thank you All

Hi and  [W4] to the forum

Automatic choke we don't have things like that now  LOL

Probably something like a temperature sensor faulty as this sends info to the engine ecu to inject more fuel and raise idle speed when cold.
You may want to get a generic code reader as you may have fault codes which may confirm diagnosis

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

Thank you, I'll give that a try and let you know how I get on ;)

Give me the old style engine, plugs points carb etc so much easier LOL

This seems to catch a lot of people,-I'm working from memory here, so bear with me. The oil separator/PCV on the 2.3 engine is hidden on the front (grille side) of the block, behind the exhaust manifold, which is in turn hidden behind the heat shield, so it cannot be seen at all. On top of the vent is a small right angled piece of rubber hose which sits behind the exhaust pipe, protected by it's own little heat shield, and connects to a steel pipe which in turn is connected to the inlet manifold. Despite the shield, over time the heat affects the rubber hose and it cracks and splits, thus allowing the engine to suck too much air and weakening the mixture, causing it to "hunt" and cut out.

To test, look for a steel pipe which appears to come from behind the exhaust heat shield and runs to the right, then up and over the engine till it connects via a rubber connector to the inlet block/manifold.You may have to slacken or remove the clamps which hold the pipe, then ease the rubber connector from the block. With the engine running, stick your finger over the end of the inlet tube on the block, and see what happens!  If it now ticks over like a swiss watch, then almost certainly the hose on the PCV is split. Blocking off the inlet tube with a bolt in the end of the connector or some other means will have it running like a dream short term, but if you decide to replace the split pipe be warned,- it will cost you about Ã,£25 from Ford,(no-one else does it), and it is very, very difficult to get to! To do the job properly you need to remove the exhaust pipe and manifold, and who wants to do that?

Thanks for that info Grandad, I will tackle that one tomorrow and see what happens, will give feed back so others can benefit :)

Hello Grandad and  welcome5

Hi David
If possible can you do some pics of your findings as this will warrant a "how to" write up.

After changing every sensor I could find, problem still exists.

Tested as described by Grandad and hey presto it worked, He was so spot on and I'm very grateful,
so started today stripping my old manual gear box Gal for the spare part , cheated a lot as this car is only for spares and got the rubber hose off in tacked.

Now to start stripping my auto  Gal and replace the rubber hose will update with pic's as I go :):):)

Fantastic all working running sweet, but now need to rewire a lot of sensors around the right hand side of the engine as most have cracked due to the excessive movement while sorting the problem of engine cuts out.

will down load photos from my camera tomorrow and if ok with grandad I will use his write up inserting the photos between stages of the works.

Thank you all for your contribution and getting my Gal running smooth once again :)

Glad I could help. I just happened to be looking on here for something else, (first time for ages), saw your "recent topics", and thought it sounded familiar. Please feel free to do whatever you want with the information, if you can turn it into something that will be useful to others, that would be good. You may want to reword it a bit, like I said, it's all from memory as I don't have the car to look at.

In fact, I don't have a Galaxy at all, but my son is on his second, and it was in order to help him that I joined the forum in the first place. It was on his first (Mk1) that I came across this problem. Like you, he had tried and tested all the electronic gizmos to no avail, but sometimes it's not about sensors and code readers, just back to basics simple stuff that gets overlooked.

chrispb, I wouldn't want you to think I was the fount of all knowledge about petrol Gals. I know very little about them except for the things my son has had a problem with, and I know more about those than I would like!
