Rear silencer

Hi all, I'm probably being a tad cheeky but I'm thinking about an upgrade to the exhaust. The back box is not in good shape which is not unexpected given its the factory fit so I'm thinking that something a little more free flowing would let the Vr6 sing, has anyone fitted a performance box to a vr6 galaxy? I've not been under the car yet so not sure of the fitment but the Ford parts diagram looks like it could be done, I'm guessing that the original will be a straight through needing the box to be cut off? It's been a while since I've put an exhaust together of my own so not sure of who is left selling universal or sports systems, the market has definitely changed during the last decade.

I put a performance exhaust on my Alhamb (ââ,¬Ëœ06 1.9) not so much for the engine efficiency benefits but because the old one had rusted and Iââ,¬â,,¢m the kind of man who likes to do a job properly so I thought stainless steel was the way to go.

I have been very pleased with it and it makes a lovely hum when I accelerate (not a loud raspy noise, just a peaceful hum). However, you do need to keep a close eye on the lads at the exhaust shop because one of them tried to weld a bracket on to it using ordinary mild steel!!! I said whatââ,¬â,,¢s the point of having a lifetime exhaust if youââ,¬â,,¢re going to weld on a piece of steel that will rust in a few years!!! I simply couldnââ,¬â,,¢t believe it. Also while youââ,¬â,,¢re at it itââ,¬â,,¢s worth making sure the heat shield is secured nice and tight. I got some clips off ebays which were cheap and have done the job brilliantly. They slide over some pegs that hold the heat shield in place and the best way to put them on is using a long socket wrench attachment (so it goes over the peg) and banging it with a hammer.

There should be a join above the rear axle as it goes over the top of the rear arm (at least if your asking about seperating it between the centre box and rear, which I think you are?) So shouldn't need to cut it off (though maybe need to cut the bolts off to get the box off).

Hi thanks for your reply. I looked for this car for over a year, I specifically wanted a late model mk2 with the Vr6 in ghia trim with the entertainment pack and auto box. This one came up a month ago at a very interesting price due to a mil light issue, having checked through the previous Mot's it appears that the light has been intermittent for 6 years. The service history backed the milage at 75k so I bought it before someone else got into it. It's in very good order other than the back box so I'm going to put something more sturdy on that will also bring some more of the v6 note, it shouldn't be too much to do other than rusty clamp. I'm an engineer so never pay someone to do anything that I can do myself, arthritic hands are making some jobs tricky but I get there in the end. What brand is your stainless box?

Hi I've had a look and my rear box is joined just a couple of inches behind it so not even a bend to worry about. It ought to be just a matter of getting a box the right length with the right hanger arrangement. Thanks for replying, I've not had the car long so trying to absorb as much info as there is out there, this forum is so comprehensive I don't need a workshop manual as its all here in perfect detail.. It's great to see the appreciation of sharing knowledge and experience.

Your MIL light should be easy to diagnose with a copy of vcds lite and a suitable cable. Ebay has cables listed under a tenner that will do the job.
