Driver's Door Locking gone bonkers! - Opposite to other doors etc - Help!

Hi.

My 2005 Gal Ghia has just developed the most bonkers problem with the central locking system and it's the same fault whether it's the key fob or the switch on the driver's door that's pressed.

Sometimes, the driver's door locks, when all the other doors unlock and sometimes it does nothing and sometimes it unlocks when all the others lock!

There is a sort of sequence to how it works but the easiest way to explain it is:

When you get out of the car and press "Lock", all the doors except the Driver's will lock. Press "Unlock" and the driver's door will LOCK, whilst the others all unlock and then press "Lock" again and the driver's door stays locked and all the others then lock.

Similarly, when you want to get in the locked car, Press "Unlock" and all the doors except the Driver's will unlock.  Then press "Lock" and the driver's door will UNLOCK whilst all the other's will lock.  Then finally press "Unlock" again and the driver's door stays unlocked and the other doors will unlock.

Anyone any idea what's going on and how to solve it please?  The motors are obviously working ok but I guess there's something gotten mixed up somewhere as it worked just fine until today.

Many thanks

Oh, and the Door LED does not come on!

If it was the "Broken wire thing" would that explain why it's working on seemingly a different "Cycle"?  It's regular as clockwork what I have to do to lock or unlock all the doors but maybe the non-flashing LED is a clue as to what's going on?  Dunno? :-[

Door wiring can cause all manor or weird and wonderful faults to be honest so it's certainly possible! I do vaguely recall someone else having a very similar issue though and they reset the locking by removing the battery for a while IIRC.

Hi.
I had a similar issue with my windows, they behaved completely nuts, and at the time it started my kids were messing with the electric window switches. I was told by several people that it would be in the wiring between the door and door pillar, but I  kept saying that the kids had caused the problem. anyway, i eventually stretched back the gaitor and found that a wire was completely broken. took 5 mins to do a repair, so worth a look, just pull back the gaitor and tug each wire to see if it has snapped.

Hi.

I'll take a gander under the gaiter tomorrow and report back.

thanks guys

Well, no broken wires  :D :(

I had a listen to the lock on the driver's side as I press the remote and it seems almost like a mechanical issue somehow.

Sometimes there is just a light buzz from the motor and sometimes a clunk then a buzz and sometimes just a clunk.  The buzz only comes when it doesn't behave, almost like it's the buzz that is missing when it just clunks.

It has a definite cycle and always operates in the same way every time, so I know that to open the locked car, I press unlock, lock then unlock again (All the doors are then open.  To lock the open car, I have to press lock, open and then lock again and all does are then locked.

When it's locked, the door LED is not flashing at all, yet the alarm is set.  Also the alarm is set when the other 3 doors lock but the driver's door is still unlocked (LED still not flashing)

Does any of this give anyone a clue as to if it's a lock issue or something come adrift inside the door maybe?

also, out of interest, today, for the 1st time, the unlocked car locked it's self after 20 seconds or so being legt unlocked (An annoying habit that my Passat did every time)

I'm baffled  ???

Did you try disconnecting the battery to let it reset?

The lock on 20 seconds is the correct behaviour if you dont open the door. Its there should you unknowingly unlock the car with the remote... they give an example like you sat on it or something lol

I'll try the battery disconnect thing today.

I get the lock on 20 seconds thing but it's never done it before (And I hate it!) - my keys got shut in the Passat on several occasions, luckily I was at home with the spare set!

Can this function be disabled with vagcom and if so, how please?

Thanks

Nope, you can do it by editing the CCM's eeprom but thats not for the faint hearted as its much more involved then doing the instrument cluster!!

No joy with disconnecting the battery, the problem still persists.

On even closer inspection, when I press LOCK (And all the other doors lock) the driver's door internal handle "Twitches" almost like it's trying to lock.  When I then press UNLOCK (All the other doors unlock) the driver's door seems to almost "Remember" that it was part way through locking and finishes the process, to leave the driver's door locked, though all the other's are open!  If I then press LOCK again, the driver's door stays locked  and all the others lock.  This is the present work-around.  It's the same, in reverse, when I need to open the doors.

I'm wondering if it's something mechanical in the lock mech that's sticking?  Is that feasible?  Any other ideas out there?

Thanks

Can't help thinking this is still a wiring issue in the gaiter, is everything else working like;

Mirrors and mirror heating
courtesy lights + door open warning
speaker

What happens when you use the key in the lock to operate locking/global opening/closing

Chris

Mirrors work ok (Though they don't heat up . . . . . . because they don't have that feature  :P )
Courtesy lights, door open & speaker all work just fine & dandy, however . . . .

When I operated the lock with the key, turning it clockwise opened the driver's door only and then the intruder alarm went off.
It will not lock with the key either.  Turning the key anti-clock meets with a fair bit of resistance and it will not turn enough to lock any of the doors.

I don't know what but it sounds like mechanical issue, like something has slipped inside the lock maybe and it's preventing the key turn and the un-setting of the alarm.

Does any of this help with a prognosis?

Take out the single torx screw down edge of door, slide outer handle forward then pull handle out.
Now try operating the lock using a screwdriver through the hole in the door into the lock, see if there's any improvement.

Even the zetec has heated mirrors the ghia certainly has, they work with the heated rear screen.

Well dang me Chris !

I didn't know it had heated mirrors  ::)   :-[ and I've really missed them from my passats (Which had a separate switch for the mirror heating by placing the mirror adjuster half way between R & L)

Can't wait to try them out  :D

I'll take a gander at the lock when the rain stops persisting

but massive thanks for the mirror tip  ;)

UPDATE

Tried the lock with the key and it again and got slightly different results from yesterday, namely:
unlocks just the driver's door (Clockwise turn) but doesn't dis-arm the alarm
Locks just the driver's door (Anti clock turn) but doesn't lock the other doors or set the alarm or turn off the interior lights

I've not had chance to remove the handle, as suggested but being as the lock part seems to be working, I've got to assume it's a central locking / electrical issue? - though I can't get my head around why the driver's door locks when open is pressed for the 2nd time and unlocks when lock is pressed  ???

Does this help any further with potential solutions?

Not to my knowledge.  Would that affect things like this?  I'll have a check tomorrow.  I'm so baffled, I'll check anything  ;)

Greggers, I've checked the tailgate lock and it's as it should be.  Turning it has no effect on curing this issue but thanks for the input

anyone else got any ideas?

Alhambra central locking gone bonkers - driver's door does the opposite of other doors

Did anyone find a solution to this problem?
I'll try disconnecting the battery tomorrow, though I had battery replaced recently and problem persisted
